FROM THE TEAM
DEAR FRIENDS AND READERS,
Welcome to Beyond High School, the magazine of the
Ashoka High School Programmes. We are thrilled to present
the inaugural issue, hoping that it brings you as much joy
and meaning as we experienced while creating it.
Let's begin with the three Ws that define this magazine:
What, Why, and Who. So, what is Beyond High School? It
aims to be a trusted companion for high school students,
offering inspiration to educators and parents alike. With
sections on Research, Skill Building, Mental Health,
Inspirational Books, and more, this magazine will motivate
and prepare you for the exciting journey of college, career,
and life beyond!
Now, let's dive into the second W: Why this magazine?
Recognising the importance of high school years and the
decisions they entail—choosing subjects, colleges, and
career paths—we, as educators and advocates for student
well-being, saw the need for a publication dedicated to high
school students, parents, and teachers. Think of us as your
friend and life coach, here to inspire and guide you through
this transformative phase and beyond.
Lastly, the third W: Who is this magazine for? Beyond High
School caters to high school students and all those involved
in their education—parents, teachers, school administrators,
counselors, and educators. We aim to create a community
where everyone can find support and inspiration.
In this issue, we bring you a captivating recap of the Young
Scholars Programme 2023, hosted at Ashoka University
from May 22 to June 2. This immersive experience proved to
be incredibly enriching, thrilling, and engaging for all
participants. Delve into the concepts we explored and read
the insightful reflections from our very own Young Scholars.
We are excited to become your sanctuary as you navigate
the highs and lows of high school. Come back to us for
inspiration, preparation, and a dose of fun. Welcome to
Beyond High School!

BRINGING MULTIDISCIPLINARITY
TO ALL THE SUBJECTS WE STUDY
Have you ever wondered how animals can carry disease-causing viruses
without getting sick themselves? Or how drones have revolutionised warfare
and changed the dynamics between nations? And what if I told you that our
body's cells behave like computers, sharing information with each other? These
mind-boggling questions were just the tip of the iceberg at YSP 2023.
Over the course of two weeks, YSP General, Sciences, and Computer Science sessions
sparked electrifying discussions and debates on cutting-edge topics. We explored
how artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare and disease management. We
delved into the ethical dilemmas brought about by powerful AI tools like GPT4. We
even embarked on a journey through history, mythology, religion, and biomedicine
to unravel the mysteries of abnormal behavior and societal perceptions of women.

But YSP was about more than just classes. It was an invitation to see the world with
fresh eyes, to question everything, and uncover the hidden connections around us.
We challenged students to choose problems, concepts, or issues that truly resonated
with them and pursue their passions.
But YSP didn't stop there. We immersed students in workshops that honed critical
thinking skills, hands-on lab experiments, and MakerSpace activities that unveiled
the interconnectedness of our world. Our goal was to inspire, motivate, and equip
students with the knowledge and confidence to make informed choices about their
subjects, colleges, and careers. And this magazine, dear readers, will continue to
empower you, issue after issue, as you forge your own unique paths in life.
Welcome to a world of boundless possibilities. Welcome to Beyond High School.
For example, if you aspire to be a medical research pioneer, you must
embrace the world of AI and other technological advancements driving
medical breakthroughs. And if psychology ignites your curiosity,
understanding the impact of societal stigma and the influence of religion
and mythology on mental health will deepen your expertise.

SKILLS IN FOCUS
WRITING ABOUT YOURSELF
LinkedIn, College Essays, and Cover Letters all share a common expectation:
they require you to write about yourself in a way that captivates, resonates,
and stands out. But what does it mean to write about oneself in a meaningful,
engaging, and high-quality manner? Does it entail composing a detailed life
history
or
showcasing
personal
achievements?
And
if
so,
which
accomplishments should be emphasised - personal, professional, or academic?
Can one delve into hobbies, interests, weaknesses, or personal projects?
As you embark on the task of self-expression, these questions and more are bound
to arise. The YSP 2023 session on "The Art of the College Essay" tackled the
intricacies of writing about oneself without falling into the traps of repetition,
vagueness, and dullness. Here, we delve into some vital insights from that session:

KNOW YOUR
AUDIENCE
Understand that your audience on LinkedIn differs greatly from
your college essay readers. Consider what each audience
expects to glean from your writing. On LinkedIn, your audience
may seek insights into your background, interests, and skills. In
contrast, college admission committees anticipate learning
about your suitability for their university community, your areas
of
interest
within
the
institution,
and
your
potential
contributions. Craft your writing to meet these expectations in a
clear and comprehensive manner.
MIND THE
ACCOMPANYING
DOCUMENTS
When submitting college essays or cover letters for
internships, you may also be required to include your resume
or CV. Consequently, your written piece cannot merely
recapitulate or provide a chronological summary of your
resume. It must go beyond that. These essays or cover letters
offer you an opportunity to expound upon the experiences
that matter most to you in terms of personal growth and
passion.
CONNECT
EXPERIENCES TO
THE END GOAL
Ensure that the experiences you choose to discuss are
relevant to your ultimate objective. In the context of a cover
letter, you must contextualise your experiences to align with
the specific internship you are applying for. In a college essay,
elucidate how a particular experience has equipped you with
skills and attributes that will contribute to your success in
college life.
HIGHLIGHT YOUR
STRENGTHS
Imagine you have dedicated seven years to mastering a
musical instrument. How can you effectively communicate
this in your essay or cover letter? Consider the strengths that
this experience has fostered within you. It may demonstrate
qualities such as perseverance, discipline, musical talent, and
multitasking abilities. Elaborate on how these strengths will
enhance your performance as a college student or intern,
thereby bridging the gap between your past accomplishments
and your future aspirations.
Undeniably, writing about oneself and life's journey can be daunting (we've
all been there!). Yet, by employing the techniques discussed above, the
writing process can become more manageable and achievable. Remember,
you possess the most profound understanding of who you are. So, go forth
and write with confidence!

TECHNOLOGY OF INTEREST - GPT 4
GPT-4 is generating waves as the most
disruptive technology in history. It's
reshaping
our
perception
of
writing,
research,
coding,
and
employment,
demanding a reevaluation of crucial skills
and highlighting the impact of technology
on our lives. But amidst the excitement,
concerns arise.
Will GPT-4 render jobs and skills
obsolete? How do we address
plagiarism when utilising these
chatbots? And what about the
potential biases that may lurk
within their algorithms?
These questions ignited a spirited discussion
among
YSP
2023
students
during
captivating
session
on
Generative
AI,
ChatGPT, GPT-4, and beyond. Jaspreet
Bindra, a visionary in digital transformation
and emerging technologies, shared insights
on how GPT-4 stands out among chatbots,
seamlessly
generating
coherent
and
seemingly original paragraphs.

Critics, however, argue that non-human writing lacks depth and perspective, as only
humans can offer genuine ideas, analysis, and viewpoints. While advanced
technology can summarise vast opinions, it may struggle to produce truly original
thoughts.
Students pondered the implications for skills like writing, editing, research, and
coding. They also raised concerns about the environmental costs associated with
such technologies, urging users and creators to be mindful of their impact.
The discussion concluded with an acknowledgment that, whether embraced or
feared, chatbots like ChatGPT and GPT-4 will inevitably shape our future. We must
adapt and learn to coexist with them.
How do you envision utilising these chatbots in your own life? Have you
already tapped into their potential for writing or other endeavors? We
