Kathleen Supové, a pianist celebrated for her avant-garde performances, is another artist pushing the
boundaries of classical music. Supové seamlessly merges classical piano with multimedia, electronics, and
theatrical elements, turning her recitals into immersive experiences. By championing contemporary
compositions and modern soundscapes, she has made classical piano performance relevant to a new
generation of listeners. Her fearless innovation has earned her numerous accolades, solidifying her place
as one of the most forward-thinking pianists today.
Composer David Fogel has taken a different route in his exploration of classical music’s evolution. Known
for his orchestral scores, Fogel introduced a new form of symphonic composition—the *Symphonina*.
Designed to be performed in about 10 minutes, the *Symphonina* distills the emotional power of a full-
length symphony into a shorter format. Through this condensed form and his work with the Symphonina
Foundation, Fogel is revitalizing symphonic music and attracting younger, more diverse audiences,
ensuring that orchestral music continues to thrive in today’s fast-paced world.
Yulia Petrova, a Russian-born pianist, exemplifies versatility in modern classical performance. With a
strong foundation in classical music, she has expanded her repertoire to include jazz, film scores, and
world music. Petrova’s ability to blend classical technique with contemporary influences has garnered her
international acclaim and numerous awards. Her performances offer a seamless fusion of genres, engaging
listeners across different musical tastes.
Stanley Grill, a composer known for his introspective and spiritual works, brings a reflective quality to
modern classical music. His compositions, often inspired by nature and philosophical thought, draw on
early music traditions while addressing contemporary themes. Grill’s chamber works and vocal pieces are
marked by emotional depth and simplicity, offering a calm, meditative space in contrast to the rapid tempo
of modern life. His timeless approach continues to resonate with both classical and modern audiences.
Finally, Sofia Agranovich, our cover artist, is renowned for her technical brilliance and emotional depth.
Agranovich has long been recognized for her ability to balance tradition and modernity in her
performances. Whether interpreting classical masterworks or performing contemporary compositions,
she brings a powerful sense of artistry and connection to each piece. Her career embodies the essence of
classical music’s past, present, and future.
Together, these musicians represent the dynamic transformation of Western classical music. By
embracing new forms like the *Symphonina*, incorporating non-Western instruments, and fusing
classical with contemporary genres, they are keeping the genre vibrant and relevant. Their contributions
demonstrate that classical music, far from being a relic, is an evolving art form that continues to explore
new horizons and captivate modern audiences.
Let’s speak to these fabulous musicians and explore their journeys, both as performers and as innovators
in classical music. Their paths are as diverse as their influences, yet all share a commitment to redefining
the genre for modern audiences. ces, yet all share a commitment to redefining the genre for modern
