Dear Readers,

Greetings from SecurityLinkIndia!

Weather security in India has become an urgent need due to the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related

disasters. The country, with its diverse geography, faces multiple weather extremes – ranging from floods, cyclones, and

heatwaves to droughts. As climate change accelerates, the implications for India’s economy, food security, health, and

infrastructure are profound.

There are various key concerns for weather security in India.

1. Rising extreme weather events:

• Floods: Major cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata are prone to flooding, often disrupting daily life and

economic activities. Seasonal monsoons, which are vital for agriculture, are becoming more erratic, causing both

droughts and floods.

• Cyclones: Coastal states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal are increasingly facing more intense cyclones,

leading to significant loss of lives, homes, and infrastructure.

• Heatwaves: Northern and central India has seen a rise in deadly heatwaves, which strain public health systems,

disrupt working hour and livelihoods, particularly for outdoor workers.

2. Public health risks:

• Heatwaves, combined with rising humidity, lead to increased incidences of heat-related illnesses such as heat strokes.

Vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue are also spreading due to changes in temperature and rainfall

patterns.

3. Migration and displacement:

• Extreme weather events, especially floods and cyclones, have led to large-scale displacement of people. Migration due

to climate shocks puts immense pressure on urban areas, already grappling with infrastructural challenges.

4. Water security:

• India’s water resources are under stress due to erratic rainfall patterns, over-extraction, and contamination. With

rivers drying up in some regions and floods in others, there is an urgent need to manage water resources sustainably.

5. Economic impact:

• Disasters caused by extreme weather events cause significant economic losses. Cyclones, floods, and droughts

damage infrastructure, crops, and businesses, leading to a drain on the economy. Insurance payouts for climate-

related damages are also increasing.

Urgent measures for weather security to check and mitigate weather concerns are of paramount importance. Disaster

preparedness and early warning systems are needed to be improved. Leveraging satellite data, mobile technology, and

IoT for real-time weather monitoring can provide vital information to vulnerable communities.

Infrastructure development has been and is errant. Sustainable infrastructure development that can withstand

extreme weather conditions is inevitable – such as flood-resilient buildings, green infrastructure for heat management,

and cyclone-proof coastal defences. Implementing rainwater harvesting, building reservoirs and efÏcient water use

policies will help combat droughts and water shortages. Urban planning must focus on flood management to mitigate

the effects of heavy rains.

Raising awareness among communities about climate risks and safety measures can enhance resilience. Public

participation in conservation efforts such as reforestation and water conservation will further strengthen local capacities.

India must implement and enforce robust climate adaptation and mitigation policies. A coordinated approach

involving central, state, and local governments is essential for effective disaster management.

Conclusively, weather security in India is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention. A multi-pronged approach

involving government, private sector, civil society, and global cooperation is necessary to address the challenges posed by

climate change. A comprehensive article on the subject has been published in this issue of magazine.

Till we meet next month, stay safe & happy reading!

With warm regards,

Santosh Pathak
