SKILLS IN FOCUS

WRITING ABOUT YOURSELF

LinkedIn, College Essays, and Cover Letters all share a common expectation:

they require you to write about yourself in a way that captivates, resonates,

and stands out. But what does it mean to write about oneself in a meaningful,

engaging, and high-quality manner? Does it entail composing a detailed life

history

or

showcasing

personal

achievements?

And

if

so,

which

accomplishments should be emphasised - personal, professional, or academic?

Can one delve into hobbies, interests, weaknesses, or personal projects?

As you embark on the task of self-expression, these questions and more are bound

to arise. The YSP 2023 session on "The Art of the College Essay" tackled the

intricacies of writing about oneself without falling into the traps of repetition,

vagueness, and dullness. Here, we delve into some vital insights from that session:

KNOW YOUR

AUDIENCE

Understand that your audience on LinkedIn differs greatly from

your college essay readers. Consider what each audience

expects to glean from your writing. On LinkedIn, your audience

may seek insights into your background, interests, and skills. In

contrast, college admission committees anticipate learning

about your suitability for their university community, your areas

of

interest

within

the

institution,

and

your

potential

contributions. Craft your writing to meet these expectations in a

clear and comprehensive manner.
