Catalog Edition Ver. 2 – Oct. 23, 2023

Dr. John W. Howe

Dr. John W. Howe became the third Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida on

January 1, 1990. Dr. Howe earned a BA in philosophy, University of Connecticut, and a

Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School. He was awarded Doctor of Divinity degrees

from Berkeley at Yale, The University of the South, Sewanee, and from Nashotah House,

and earned his PhD from the Graduate Theological Foundation with studies at Oxford

University.

Bishop Howe has conducted preaching and teaching missions throughout the United

States and in some 17 countries around the world. His publications include three books,

two monographs, and numerous magazine articles. In 2020 he was received as a bishop

in good standing in the Anglican Church in North America.

As 2021 drew to a close, he stepped down after six years of serving as Senior Pastor of

The Lake of the Woods Church in Locust Grove, Virginia. Since then, he has completed

two new titles scheduled for release very soon.

The first book, A Man Sent from God, should be available in early 2024. This volume is a

personal memoir that not only chronicles his witness of God in action at home and around

the world but also recounts the turbulent evolution of The Episcopal Church over the past

few decades and the formation of the Anglican Church in North America.

A second book, The Christmas Characters is anticipated for release later in 2024. This work

takes a look at some of the interesting personalities whose stories surround the coming

of Christ. It is illustrated by Karen Howe.

Previous publications by the author include, Anointed by the Spirit, Our Anglican Heritage,

Sex – Should We Change the Rules, Which Way, and The Bible: Too Hot to Handle.

Currently able to enjoy more time with his family and friends, he continues to dedicate

time and effort to his personal writing and other projects.

Teaching Series

Dedicated to the service of our Lord through the spreading of the Good News. These

recordings include sermons and teaching series by Dr. John W. Howe primarily while rec-

tor of Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax, Virginia. Additionally, we include recordings while

he was Bishop of Central Florida, and while Senior Pastor of Lake of the Woods Church in

Locust Grove, Virginia. Selected recordings from various special events are also included.

While some of these messages may reveal an aging historical context, the truths con-

tained herein remain the same. God’s Word is unchanging.

Special Series

The Characters of Christmas – A look at each of the

people whose stories surround the coming of

Christ. Zechariah and Elizabeth, John the Baptizer,

Joseph, Mary, Jesus himself, and Simeon and Anna.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

The Counterfeit Kingdom – We need to take Satan

seriously, but need not fear him because Christ has

won the overwhelming victory. A balanced series

covering the occult, demons, deliverance, and the

Antichrist. (6 lectures in The Early Years)

Doubters Welcome – This series deals with some of

the thorny questions that invariably arise when

people begin to seriously consider the claims of

Christ. The questions explored are: What does it

matter so long as you’re sincere? What about those

that never heard of Christ? How do I know the Bible

is true? How can I accept miracles? How can a good

God allow pain and suffering?

(5 lectures in The Early Years)

Empowered For Ministry – Jesus was the Son of

God for all his life here on Earth, but during the first

30 years he performed no miracles. The key to his

ministry - and ours - was the anointing of the Holy

Spirit. In this series, Dr. Howe looks at the empow-

ering of the Holy Spirit as it was manifested in the

life and ministry of Jesus, and as his empowering

becomes a model for ours.

(12 lectures in The Early Years)

Evangelism – How to give away your faith. The right

motivation, timing, message and answer.

(4 lectures in The Early Years

First Things First – A focus on the lessons and prin-

ciples the Lord has taught the body at Truro about

worship, outreach, finances, knowing God’s will

and small group ministry.

(7 lectures in The Early Years)

Freeing Our Relationships – How are we to serve

God and discover freedom in the midst of our rela-

tionships, especially with those who exercise some

kind of authority over us? What kind of freedom?

(4 lectures in The Early Years)

Holy Spirit – A topical study of some of the most

urgent and pressing questions in this area of re-

newal. Who is the Holy Spirit, and what is he doing?

(8 lectures in The Early Years)

Gifts of the Spirit – This series addresses a number

of the most controversial issues regarding the gifts

of the Holy Spirit and their use today. Dr. Howe

gives practical instruction for identifying the gift

you now have, receiving new ones, and for devel-

oping and using your gifts for ministry.

(8 lectures in The Early Years)

The Lord’s Prayer – Jesus probably never intended

the Lord’s Prayer to be a set prayer; rather his in-

tention was to give us an outline for prayer, a listing

of God’s spiritual priorities. When we really under-

stand what is being said in the Lord’s Prayer, we

cannot stop at simply repeating the words, but find

that it involves a commitment of our whole life.

(9 lectures in The Early Years)

2

Male and Female Created He Them – Explore with

Dr. Howe the Biblical vision of men and women in

Christ. A course on the Biblical doctrine of love,

marriage, sex, parenting and dealing with marital

crisis. (6 lectures in The Early Years)

Men – As God Calls Us to Be – A series of teachings

“for men only” on the masculine role within the

family and within the church as defined by scrip-

ture. Encouragement to those who know God is

calling them into ministry and leadership, but who

don’t know quite where to begin.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

The Nicene Creed – The official formulary of ortho-

dox Christian faith since 325 A.D., and yet perhaps

it is too familiar. What do we mean when we say,

“We believe...?” A wonderful series for your per-

sonal study or for a Newcomers’, Young Peoples’,

or Confirmation Class.

(9 lectures in The Early Years)

Other Religions – A look at the major historical re-

ligious and philosophical systems that have been

embraced as alternatives to Christianity. Where

they agree, and disagree, with Jesus. The systems

discussed are Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Islam, Hin-

duism, Buddhism, Chinese Religions, and God and

the Guru. (8 lectures in The Early Years)

Seven Last Words – Jesus’ words from the cross are

variously recorded in all four gospels, making a re-

markable Lenten presentation. Dr. Howe has ex-

panded upon them in a series of messages marking

a most appropriate observance of a “Holy Lent.”

(8 lectures in The Early Years)

The Ten Commandments – Jesus came to fulfill the

law; not once does he lower the standard but he

raises it even higher than before. The good news of

the Gospel is that his Spirit, the indwelling Christ, is

reproducing the very character of God in us, thus

enabling us to keep his standards.

(10 lectures in The Early Years)

Introduction To

The Old Testament

Part 1 –In the Beginning – This course is designed

to be an aid to a personal study of the Old Testa-

ment. In Part I we are introduced to several of the

great themes that frame the whole story of salva-

tion: the sovereignty of God, the choosing of his

people, the promise of redemption, the place of

suffering in his eternal purposes.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

Part II – Prelude to the Kingdom – Part II introduces

us to the nature of the covenant God made with Is-

rael, the warnings he made regarding compromise,

and the process of government that preceded Is-

rael's “Golden Age” of kingship.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

Part III – The Diary of a Poet – Part III is an intro-

duction to the book of Psalms, primarily as the

psalms reflect the life and times of King David.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

Part IV – History of the Kingdom – This series traces

the unfolding history of the Kingdom beginning

with the “brief shining moment” of the Golden Age

under David and Solomon, then moving through

the unhappy time of division into the northern and

southern Kingdoms of Israel and Judah. It moves

swiftly and inexorably toward defeat and collapse -

and yet the promise of restoration still waits.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

Part V – The Major Prophets – A brief introduction

to the prophetic writings of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Eze-

kiel and Daniel. An invaluable aid for the serious

student of scripture. (6 lectures in The Early Years)

Part VI – The Minor Prophets – “Minor” only in the

sense that their books are shorter in length, the re-

maining twelve prophets are discussed in terms of

their continuing relevance to the believer today. (6

lectures in The Early Years)

Part VII – The Writings – This course concludes Dr.

Howe's introduction to the Old Testament focusing

on the tough wisdom of the Book of Proverbs, the

strange irony of Ecclesiastes, the lovely stories of

Ruth and Esther, and the remarkable allegory of the

Song of Solomon.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

Elijah – One of the great heroes of scripture. These

lectures focus primarily on the confrontation that

God called him to have with the prophets of the

Baals. His challenge continues to reverberate to-

day: “If the Lord is God, follow Him.”

(4 lectures in The Early Years)

Exodus – A collection of twelve short teachings by

Dr. Howe covering the book of Exodus.

(12 lectures in The Early Years)

Proverbs – We are commanded to “Get wisdom” -

not intellectual brilliance, but a moral, ethical sense

of a life lived in relation to God. Wisdom is the ap-

plying of God's law to the whole of life.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

4

New

Testament

Series

Matthew – An examination of the teaching sections

of Matthew’s Gospel. What Jesus said about the

kingdom of God, its blessings, and its cost is ex-

plored. (8 lectures in The Early Years)

Mark – Mark’s gospel can be read as one lengthy

sermon presented for the purpose of winning peo-

ple to faith in Christ. This fast-moving account em-

phasizes the broad sweep of Christ’s earthly minis-

try. (6 lectures in The Early Years)

Luke – Luke’s version of the Gospel is most like the

kind of historical narrative that we are familiar with

in today’s world. Luke announces his purpose as

that of “writing an orderly account for you… that

you may know the truth concerning the things of

which you have been informed.”

(12 lectures in The Early Years)

Luke (continued) – Dr. Howe continues his lecture

series on the gospel of Luke above with lectures 13

thru 24. (12 lectures in The Early Years)

Miracles of Jesus – Only seven miracles are re-

counted in John’s Gospel, but they have been se-

lected with a very particular purpose: “These are

written that you may believe that Jesus is the

Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may

have life in his name.” A study of these miracles and

their implications for our faith.

(8 lectures in The Early Years)

The Book of Acts – The book of Acts is seen in its

own historical context, and its lessons speak with

resounding clarity to the issues before the church

today. A truly exciting series. Part one of two parts.

(12 lectures in The Early Years)

The Book of Acts (continued) – Dr. Howe continues

with Part Two of the Book of Acts.

(12 lectures in The Early Years)

Romans – The most comprehensive theological

treatise in the New Testament. Particular attention

is given to questions such as, “What about those

who have never heard?” and “How can a good God

allow suffering in his world?”

(12 lectures in The Early Years)

I Corinthians – The church of Corinth was in many

ways the most “spiritual” congregation in the apos-

tolic era, yet intermingled with its devotion to the

Lord was gross immorality and great confusion re-

garding the work of the Holy Spirit. The book speaks

with startling clarity to many of the issues before

the Church at large today.

(7 lectures in The Early Years)

II Corinthians – Actually the fourth of a series of let-

ters from Paul to the church in Corinth, this epistle

lays bare the gamut of Paul’s deepest emotions as

he defends his ministry. His concern is not personal

insecurity, but the grave consequences to the Co-

rinthians themselves that will ensure if they reject

the apostolic gospel and embrace some other one.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

5

Galatians – The shattering conflict between the

Law and the Gospel is the great theme of this letter.

At stake was the very basis of our salvation: is it

something we must earn or merit, or is it the gift of

God’s grace? The subtle temptation to add require-

ment to what God has offered freely in Christ was

already pervasive in the first century. How much

more so today? (4 lectures in The Early Years)

Ephesians – A study of the great epistle of Christian

fellowship in which the “mystery of God’s will” –

that He would unite all things in Christ – is dis-

closed. Paul’s very practical teachings on relation-

ships, especially that of husband and wife, are dis-

cussed. (6 lectures in The Early Years)

Philippians – One of the warmest of Paul’s letters,

to a church that had entered into spiritual and fi-

nancial partnership with him. A call to servanthood

and (subsequent) greatness.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

Colossians – The Cosmic Christ, the One “in whom

the whole creation holds together,” is encoun-

tered. Exhortation to hold fast to true faith, hope

and love. (4 lectures in The Early Years)

I & II Thessalonians – The letters of Paul to an ex-

traordinarily praiseworthy church – one that be-

came “a sounding board” to the whole Mediterra-

nean world. What kind of ministry produced this

kind of a church? In the second letter Paul discusses

“the man of sin” and what is “restraining” him.

(8 lectures in The Early Years)

Pastoral Epistles – The practical instructions of the

mature apostle, Paul, to two younger leaders (Tim-

othy and Titus) who were about to inherit pastoral

responsibilities. Basic to any ministry of caring.

(4 lectures in The Early Years)

Hebrews – A towering masterpiece of correlation

and contrast between the work of Christ as our

great High Priest and the whole Old Testament sac-

rificial system. (6 lectures in The Early Years)

James – A series on “the most misunderstood book

in the Bible”. James explores, perhaps more deeply

than any other writer, including Paul, the full impli-

cation of salvation by grace. The lectures demon-

strate that the whole “faith vs. works” controversy

rests upon false premises.

(5 lectures in The Early Years)

The Letters of Peter – Once considered brash, im-

petuous, and even comical, Peter finally becomes

precisely what Jesus called him to be: a rock and a

tower of strength who encourages others to stand

fast in the midst of trial.

(8 lectures in The Early Years)

The Letters of John – A look at the letters of Jesus’

closest friend, John. “The Apostle of Love,” John

tells us clearly that his purpose in writing is that our

joy might be complete. His letters are love letters,

and it is our joy to read them.

(6 lectures in The Early Years)

Book of Jude – Behavior Does Matter. (1 lecture)

Revelation – Part One: A simple, straightforward

glimpse into this most controversial of books. We

first assess what this book meant to its earliest au-

dience and then explore its continuing message and

relevance for all subsequent generations.

(12 lectures in The Early Years)

Revelation – Part Two: (12 lectures in Early Years)
