HISTORY OF BLACKFOOT

Founded on the Utah Northern Railroad in 1878 at the northern edge of the Fort Hall Indian

Reservation, the city evolved as the center of an irrigated agricultural area. On January 13th,

1885, Bingham County was established with Blackfoot as it’s county seat.

Blackfoot was incorporated as a city under the laws of the state in 1907. By 1910 the population

in Blackfoot had increased to 2,200. By 1910 the city of Blackfoot had a solid foundation and was

consistently growing and prospering.

Blackfoot boasts the largest potato industry in any one area and is known as “The Potato Capital

of the World.” It is the site of the Idaho Potato Museum, which showcases the history of Idaho’s

potato industry along with a gift shop and café.
