Sporting Edge
Autumn 2017
CHAMPIONS GALORE!!!
The Steve Bernard Foundation is delighted to announce that
four of our supported athletes have become World, British
and Invictus Games Gold Medallists.
Captain Luke Sinnott won Gold in the 200m & 400m and Silver in the 100m at the Invictus Games Toronto 2017.
Luke was the main speaker at our Sporting Dinner earlier this year. He gave the most inspirational talk to our
guests about his life in Afghanistan, how his life had been changed forever after suffering appalling injuries when
stepping on an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) and losing his comrades in the hellish conflict whilst fighting for
our country, but his outlook on life and his determination to succeed was plain to see.
Lewis Brimble from Bournemouth, who had a kidney transplant in 2011, represented Great Britain at the World
Transplant Games in Malaga, Spain and won Gold & Silver medals in the Badminton Doubles & Singles events.
Hannah Moore became the British Paratriathlon Champion and achieved a massive step towards her dream of
representing GB at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo after a stunning success at Mallory Park, Leicestershire.
Lindsay Chapman took home an Invictus Games Gold in the IT5 100m final. When we sponsored Lindsay she
replied with this lovely message to us 'Thank you for helping make the magic happen! I promise to give it my all'.
She certainly did!

Serving Sport ∙ Remembering Steve
Huge success for the SBF Sportsman's Dinner
A full house packed out the Hilton Hotel’s Ball Room in February for a blockbuster of a night,
full of inspiring stories from our four guest speakers, as well as some fantastic comedy and
entertainment along the way.
The glittering sell out event, organised celebrate what would have been Stevie’s 30 birthday
on February 14th, captivated the audience from start to finish.
The night began with an Olympic theme; Olympic Gold medallist Alex Danson and Team GB
Trampolinist Nathan Bailey talking about their Olympic stories and the experiences they went
through along the way. It was a great way to kickstart the night learning about the sacrifices
and endeavour that these athletes had to put in and epitomised the ethos of the Foundation
that hard work and determination can pay off.
The guests were then treated to a surprise video link with Jeff Stelling and the Gillette Soccer
Saturday team announcing the launch of the 30 for 30 challenge. Many thanks to Andy Gray
and Craig Mathie for setÝng up the filmed piece.
Captain Luke Sinnott then took to the stage and had everybody on their feet for a standing
ovation after hearing of his story.
Luke lost both his legs and suffered severe injuries to his left arm in a bomb blast whilst serv-
ing on duty in Afghanistan. His story about recovering from this life changing incident to the
point of competing at the Invictus Games for GB, was truly inspirational and will live long in
the memories of the guests present on the night.
The final guest speaker was former Liverpool footballer Alan Kennedy, and he spoke to the
audience about his amusing career as a professional. There were many a tale that he talked
through about plenty of his high profile
team mates/managers and laughter was
aplenty, which was a perfect way to cap off
a fantastic night of entertainment.
An auction and rafne concluded the night
and the SBF were proud to announce that
over £12,000 was raised from the Dinner on
what was a great celebration of Steve’s
birthday and memory.
We would like to thank all our Sponsors and
guests who helped make this Dinner a great
success. It was the Foundation’s most successful formal event to date and was a great way to
try and give something back to all our supporters throughout the years.
Jeff Stelling and the Gillette Soccer Saturday Team
Congratulations to Christchurch FC player Grant Cormack for completing his 30 for 30 challenge
which was to run 5km for every day in June and to raise funds for our Foundation. His friends,
family and teammates all doubted him saying he was the worst trainer in the club! However, he
has smashed it and he has raised over £850. A terrific effort Grant!
SBF Trustees, the two Sues (picture above) at their 30 for 30
cake and coffee challenge for the morning, at Leybourne
Avenue. The event raised £190.37.
David McWilliam of Ellis Jones Solicitors had to complete 30
sports in 30 days. He took on a wide range of challenges from
archery, gymnastics, fencing, boxing and wheelchair rugby!
He managed to raise over £600 to support the Foundation.
Here is David pictured with the Dorset Destroyers Wheelchair
Rugby team!
A big thank you and congratulations
must go to another amazing 6 year
old boy, Harry 'Hazza' Percival who
has been fundraising for us on his 30
for 30 challenge by chipping 30 golf
balls into a target for the last 30 days
mostly whilst wearing a different
outfit! And he raised a very impres-
sive £197.44, all of which goes to
helping people in sport.
After Jeff Stelling & the Gillette Soccer Saturday team launched the event on video at
the Sportsman's Dinner, Tony completed his 30 for 30 challenge of a different beer each
day, by getÝng Soccer Saturday celebrity Matt Le Tissier to join him for the final tipple!
Every so often we get to meet a really special child, nor-
mally we are sup-
porting
them
in
sport, but this time
this little lad was
supporting
us!
Take a bow Harry
Hart, you have made
us all smile with
your daily videos of
your
fundraising
efforts of doing 30
Rabonas every day
for 30 days which
even included his 6th
birthday and having
AFC
Bournemouth
star Junior Stanislas
join you. Thank you
so much Harry and
your
parents
for
raising
£1153.75
(including Gift Aid)
and completing such an impressive 30 for 30 challenge.

Recent SBF Projects
Winton Primary School Bournemouth
Tony was invited along to the largest Junior school in Bournemouth, Win-
ton Primary School to see their new Table Tennis Academy which has
been set up and run by two very enthusiastic and knowledgeable PE
teachers, Mr Millar and Mr Burt.
The Foundation has bought the school two top quality indoor Table Tennis
tables to ensure that 'Rain does not stop play!' for this school and keeps
all of the students pro-active. Hopefully, this will help the children develop
key skills within their physical literacy such as hand-eye co-ordination,
team work and quick sports decisions. We hope that all of these children
enjoy the lessons at the pre and after school clubs that this school puts on
for them.
Hannah Attenburrow
We were delighted to be able to help Hannah Attenburrow obtain her
Level 2 British Cycling Road Cycling Coaching Award so she can continue
to share her passion and knowledge of cycling with others, in particular to
women and children across Hampshire & Sussex.
Hannah has previously competed in some of the highest levels of Moun-
tain Biking (Cross Country Elite Level) in the UK and she, like us at SBF, is
extremely passionate about youngsters of all abilities having access to the
best standards of coaching possible and also to encourage families to get
out together on their bikes.
Dorset Storm Basketball Club
The Foundation went along to the Dorset Storm Basketball Club at St Ed-
wards School in Poole on a Saturday morning to see how their club and
particularly the youth section is thriving since we bought them some
National League standard backboards and rings which has enabled them
to play at the highest levels possible in the UK. They now have the largest
youth section of 120 youngsters from Under 18's down to Under 10's in
the South of England and with the enthusiasm and high level of coaching
shown by the coaches, it won't be long before we see some of the kids
becoming big stars of the Basketball world!
130 Squadron (Bournemouth)
Air Cadets
Pictured are some of the members of the 130
Squadron (Bournemouth) Air Cadets for whom
we bought various sports equipment and leader-
ship teachers kits which will aid them in their
training development and team work exercises
and therefore improve their co-ordination and
general fitness.

Ringmer Rovers YFC
Ringmer Rovers YFC players Conor Doyle, Saje and Dan all completed their
Level 1 coaching award recently thanks to the support of the Steve Bernard
Foundation. The lads will be taking up coaching positions with their teams this
season.
Leadership Programmes
Our Foundation is very pro-active with the Primary Schools in Bournemouth via Sarah Dunsford and getÝng the children to join
in with Primary Leadership programmes where groups of pupils plan a working sports project to encourage and engage more
children into sport. Five of these schools were selected to receive sports equipment to start up these sports leadership pro-
jects. So congratulations to Heathlands, St Lukes, Bethany, Hillview and Stourfield Primary Schools for submitÝng the winning
applications.
Carla Randall
We were pleased to be able to support Carla Randall, a Sports Physiologist and Chartered Scien-
tist at Brighton Phoenix Athletics Club where she provides voluntary Scientific Support to a group
of 15 junior and senior middle-distance runners and their coaches, by purchasing a Lactate Pro 2
Analyser set which enables her to monitor the runners lactate threshold levels and thereby im-
proving their warm ups and training sessions which will ultimately give them an added edge and
opportunity to reach their first major global championships.
Good luck to you all.
Gemma Mitchell
We were very pleased to meet the delightful Gemma Mitchell at the Victoria Educa-
tional Centre and present her with some more specialised Boccia balls for Gemma to
improve her standard of competing. Gemma is very dedicated at Boccia and has
worked so hard at her game that she can now compete without the use of a ramp.
Update: We are extremely proud to hear that Gemma achieved a Silver medal in the
National Championships. Well done Gemma!
Southbourne Tennis Club
We were delighted to see our wheelchairs being put to good use at the South-
bourne Tennis Club in Iford Lane, where their head coach David Sanger has set up
a thriving disability tennis section with regular sessions every week come rain or
shine!
Good luck for the future and keep on growing!
Moordown St John's Primary School
We were delighted to be able to help Moordown St John's Primary School in their
quest to save their indoor swimming pool. This 40 year old facility, in which over
500,000 children have learned to swim was in danger of being closed down due to
ongoing repairs and general running costs. However, the local community, compa-
nies, the staff, pupils and parents rallied around to raise over £25,000 to repair
and enhance the pool and changing rooms for decades to come. Well done to
everyone who were involved.
Liam and Ryan Openshaw
Pictured left are Poole brothers Liam and Ryan Openshaw who are making big waves in
the Modern Pentathlon World. SBF have supported them by supplying the boys with top
quality fencing equipment that they required to be able to compete at the highest level
in their sport. 13 year old Liam has now been selected for the English Talent Programme
and his younger brother Ryan who is 11 now attends their development days.
Keep up the good works guys and we look forward to hearing about your international
sporting progress!
Pictured right is David Howe who ran the Great Newham 10km Run at the Queen Elizabeth Olym-
pic Stadium on Sunday 2nd July, finishing 101st out of 8000 runners in a creditable time of 40.11
minutes and raising over £200 for Stevie's Foundation!
David said that he wanted to give something back to SBF for the support we have given to his
son's Youth football team, Grange Athletic.
The Teachers and sixth form pupils at Bournemouth School completed their
annual football tournament in aid of the Foundation for an eleventh successive
year. A good turnout again this year and it was the 1st XI football team who
were the victors!
We are privileged to have special working relationships with many local schools
across the South Coast, one of which is Poole High School who have again raised
funds for our Foundation with their annual 'Marathon Relay' where the school hous-
es compete against each other. They raised a very impressive £485.35 for us and to
cap off their academic and sporting year they have just achieved the prestigious
School Games Mark Gold Award which recognises top quality leadership and partici-
pation in school sports.
Well done PHS and thank you very much!
It's always a special moment when one of Stevie's football clubs, Grange
Athletic Under 16's win a prestigious trophy, the Bankes Cup. They then
made it even more special by nominating us as their charity so we re-
ceived £100 from the Bankes Charity.
A big 'Thank You' to our friends at
Tennis Bound for raising a wonderful
£254.40 from their Parent/Child Ten-
nis day in the Summer at Muscliff
Park. Well done William Bound for
organising the event.
The 1st Poulner Scouts recently went on an overseas aid project to Ka-
vuzi in Malawi and we were delighted to donate several football kits
(Thank you Longfleet YFC) and some footballs from Star Soccer Supplies.
The reception the scouts received from the villagers was amazing, they
normally play with a ball made up from compressed plastic bags and
their pitch was an area of compacted mud, so you can imagine the reac-
tion to a new pumped up football and some quality kits!! As Mark Jenkins of 1st Poulner quoted ' When they were presented
with the kits and balls, they cheered and clapped like they had won the lottery!' In their world they probably have!

unteers. All of the attending children received a medal
