THE POWER OF CONNECTION
Marisol’s Journey
Marisol, a 19-year-old from Sonoma, radiates passion and determination. Her
quiet strength and big heart have been nurtured through mentorship,
transforming her into a powerful advocate for change.
Her journey began with the unwavering support of her mentor, Francie Ward,
who became a guiding force in her life. Whether attending impromptu
meetings with community advocates or exploring the vibrant murals of San
Francisco, Francie was always by her side.
During her time at Sonoma Valley High School, Marisol advocated for a mural
celebrating the culture and plight of farm workers. Now a sophomore at UCLA,
she studies public health and plans to pursue a career in medicine. “I wanted
to make a difference in the world through public health, but I think I can make
an even bigger impact through medicine,” Marisol explains.
Mentoring: The Backbone of Marisol’s Connection
Mentoring has been a transformative force in Marisol's life, and Francie has
been her beacon of unwavering support. “Knowing that Marisol has a team—
her family, her teachers, her mentor, and the entire Mentoring Alliance—
cheering her along makes all the difference,” Francie says.

“When I was in school, I often didn’t feel
seen and felt like an outsider. I knew there
was more to be done to make students like
me feel seen.”
– Marisol
THE POWER OF CONNECTION
Greg and Joe's Creative Connection
Greg became a mentor to make a meaningful impact, and when he met Joe, a
curious third grader at Flowery Elementary, their shared love for building and
creativity ignited a powerful connection.
"I wanted to be a positive influence in a young person’s life," Greg shares.
"When I met Joe, his curiosity and enthusiasm were infectious. We started
building with Legos, creating projects, and exploring the school garden."
– Greg
For Joe’s mom, Greg’s mentorship meant more than just companionship for
her son. "Greg showed Joe the possibilities that education and creativity could
offer," she shares. "He became a positive role model—a guiding presence in
Joe’s life."
Mentoring: The Heart of Greg and Joe’s Connection
Greg found fulfillment in their relationship. "Being a mentor is about more than
teaching," Greg emphasizes. "It’s about learning alongside your mentee, seeing
the world through their eyes, and being there for them unconditionally."
“Our time was spent exploring, imagining,
and simply being present. It’s the power to
just be.” – Greg

DISCOVERING PASSION
THROUGH CONNECTION
Itzel’s Story
Itzel's mentoring journey began in first grade, facing challenges that tested her
resilience. In fourth grade, she met Connie, whose passion for the outdoors
sparked a transformative journey.
"I remember my first hike with Connie," Itzel recalls with a smile. "I was hesitant
at first—it was hot, and I wasn't sure I'd make it to the top. But Connie's
encouragement and patience kept me going. When we finally reached the
summit, the view took my breath away. It was more than just a hike; it was a
moment of triumph and discovery."
Today, Itzel is a dedicated nurse at Kaiser, bringing compassion and
understanding to her patients every day. "Being a nurse allows me to extend
the care and guidance I received to others," she shares. "It’s incredibly
rewarding to know that I can make a difference in someone’s life, just like
Connie did for me."
Mentoring: The Foundation of Itzel’s Connection
Driven by a desire to pay it forward, Itzel now mentors a fourth grader at
Prestwood Elementary. "I love spending time with her," she says warmly. "Being
there for her in the same way Nancy and Connie were there for me—it’s
incredibly special."

the beauty of our surroundings. Her
guidance sparked a passion for physical
activity that transformed my health and

DISCOVERING NEW WORLDS
THROUGH CONNECTION
Vickie and Anahi's Story
Nearly three years ago, Vickie Soulier was matched with Anahi, a curious
student eager for new experiences. Before meeting Vickie, Anahi had never
attended a live theater performance, but their first trip to Transcendence
Theatre Company changed that. “I didn’t realize how much I’d love it,” Anahi
says with a grin. “We’ve been to so many shows, and I’ve saved every playbill.”
Their shared love of musical theater has become a special bond, with Anahi
proudly displaying her collection at home.
Vickie, who missed working with kids after years of volunteering at her
children’s schools, found mentoring to be the perfect way to reconnect.
Together, she and Anahi have enjoyed everything from art classes to trips to
Point Reyes. Anahi, who excels in school and plays volleyball and basketball at
Adele Harrison, has Vickie cheering her on every step of the way.
Beyond mentoring, Vickie supports local nonprofits. “When you give locally, you
can see the impact,” she says. Her recent sponsorship and donation at our
Summer Soirée will enable the Mentoring Alliance to thrive and offer more
engaging activities in the coming year.
Mentoring: The Heart of Vickie’s Connection
Vickie’s journey with Anahi has reminded her of the power of mentorship.
“Seeing Anahi grow has been one of the most rewarding experiences,” she
shares with pride.
“Creating opportunities for our kids is
essential to building a strong future for
Sonoma Valley.” – Vickie
