Further research has highlighted the dangers of

consuming ultra-processed foods. Researchers

from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China,

discovered that the risk of hypertension, other

cardiovascular events, cancer, digestive diseases,

mortality and more, increased with every 100g of

ultra-processed foods consumed each day.

The team conducted a review of 41 prospective

cohort studies spanning the Americas, Europe,

Asia and Oceania, assessing the association

between ultra-processed foods and health outcomes

prior to April 2024. Taken together, the studies

involved a total of 8,286,940 adult patients aged

18 years or older from the general population

(30.8% of whom were male and 69.2% were female).

“Ultra-processed foods are characterised

by high sugar, high salt, and other

non-nutritive components, exhibiting

low nutritional density yet high

caloric content,” said Xiao Liu,

MD. “This nutritional imbalance

contributes to a wide range of

adverse health outcomes.

Emerging evidence suggests a dose-

response relationship between

ultra-processed food consumption and

negative health outcomes – meaning

the more ultra-processed foods consumed,

the greater the health risk. Therefore, reducing

ultra-processed foods intake, even modestly,

may ofer measurable health benefits.”

Having school dinners rather than packed lunches could

The researchers found that the picky children were less likely

THE A-Z OF NATURAL HEALTH

D is for Dandelion

“Dandelion is truly remarkable: every part of the plant can be put to good use,”

says Mani Norland, Principal, The School of Health (www.schoolofhealth.com).

“The buds can be pickled and enjoyed as a caper-like delicacy. The bright yellow

flowers are edible, and the flufy seed heads invite children (and the young at

heart) to blow them into the wind, or even tell the time, old-style. The stems contain

a milky sap traditionally used to treat warts. Dandelion leaves are a powerful

natural diuretic, helping to move excess fluid from the body. Their intense bitterness

also stimulates the liver and gallbladder, supporting digestion and detoxification.

The roots, rich and earthy, carry that same bitter quality and are especially

beneficial for cleansing the liver. Collect the leaves before flowering and the roots

after the flowers die back. The rest you can pick as they appear and as appropriate.”

Multiple chronic illnesses

could increase depression risk

Like us on Facebook: facebook.com/yourhealthyliving

People with multiple long-term physical

health conditions are at a greater risk

of developing depression, a study

has shown.

Researchers from the University of

Edinburgh used data from more than

142,000 people in the UK Biobank

study to examine how physical

illnesses interact to influence the risk of

depression. Participants were aged

37-73 years and had at least one

chronic physical condition but no

history of depression.

Scientists used statistical clustering

techniques to group individuals by their

physical illness profiles and tracked how

these clusters related to later diagnoses

of depression. One group, which included

people experiencing the highest rates of

physical illness also showed the highest

risk of developing depression. People

with both heart disease and diabetes

were also found to be at high risk, as were

those with chronic lung conditions like

asthma or COPD – chronic obstructive

pulmonary disease.

In the highest-risk groups, about one in

12 people developed depression over the

next 10 years, compared with about one

in 25 people without physical conditions.

Lauren DeLong, lead author and PhD

student at the University of Edinburgh’s

School of Informatics, said: “We hope

our findings inspire other researchers to

investigate and untangle the links between

physical and mental health conditions.”

The study was published in the journal

Nature Communications Medicine.

A new study has revealed that

vitamin D supplements may help

to counteract the ageing process.

The study was carried out by

researchers at Mass General

Brigham and the Medical College

of Georgia, and the results were

published in The American Journal

of Clinical Nutrition. The findings

from the VITAL randomised

controlled trial revealed that

vitamin D supplementation helps

maintain telomeres, which are

protective caps at the ends of

chromosomes that shorten during

ageing and are linked to the

development of certain diseases.

The study was a randomised,

double-blind, placebo-controlled

trial of vitamin D3 (2,000 IU per

day) and omega-3 fatty acid

(1 g per day) supplementation.

It involved 1,054 participants who

were tracked for five years.

Compared with taking a placebo,

taking vitamin D3 supplements

significantly reduced telomere

shortening over four years,

preventing the equivalent of nearly

three years of ageing compared

with the placebo. Omega-3 fatty

acid supplementation had no

significant efect on telomere

length throughout the follow-up.

“Our findings suggest that targeted

vitamin D supplementation may be

a promising strategy to counter a

biological ageing process, although

further research is warranted,” said

Haidong Zhu, PhD, first author

of the report and a molecular

geneticist at the Medical College

of Georgia, Augusta University.

Health News

You have recently brought a new form of technology to the

supplement market, BioSNEDS, which solves the issue of

poor nutrient bioavailability. What is bioavailability and

why is it so important?

Bioavailability refers to how much of a nutrient or plant compound

is absorbed into your systemic blood circulation and made available

for your body’s cells to use. Many supplements contain high

amounts of nutrients or bioactive compounds, but if these aren’t

suficiently bioavailable, only a small fraction may be used by the

body, while the rest is either broken down by the liver or is simply

excreted. This is especially common with natural compounds like

curcumin, resveratrol and CoQ10. They may be powerful in theory,

but in reality, they’re often unstable in the gut, poorly absorbed and

deactivated by the liver - all leading to poor bioavailability. Because

bioavailability is essential to product efectiveness, I’ve been on

the lookout for a clean technology that could successfully address

these challenges. In 2023 I was made aware of BioSNEDS, which

had already been in development for several years. The scientific

evidence they had for its superiority was undeniable.

How does the technology work?

Natural compounds are fermented with probiotics, nutritional

yeasts and medicinal mushrooms to prepare them for optimal use

by the body. The compounds are encapsulated in glucan particles

during fermentation, protecting them from early breakdown and

keeping them stable in the digestive tract.

A second lipid-based layer is then added, allowing the nutrients

to disperse more efectively in the digestive system and

improving absorption. This ‘double bubble’ structure enables the

nutrients to travel through the lymphatic system instead of going

straight to the liver, where they might otherwise be broken down

before the body can use them. The result is greater availability of

the nutrient or compound for use by the body’s cells.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants

to get more from their supplements or daily routine?

The most significant advice I could give is that one’s supplement

programme will be much more efective if the person also

addresses the mental and emotional aspects of their health at

the same time. As clichéd as it sounds, the mind and spirit are

of equal significance to the body in terms of a person’s overall

wellbeing. Efective stress management, taking more ‘me time’

and learning to let go of worry about things you cannot control,

can, for some people, be even more powerful than a healthy diet

or the right supplements.

Jimmy Doherty and Shivi Ramoutar

armer Jimmy Doherty and chef Shivi

Ramoutar have recently returned to

our screens with series 2 of Jimmy

and Shivi’s Farmhouse Breakfast on

ITV. Set on Jimmy’s Sufolk farm, the show

celebrates delicious food and drink, crafts,

animals and country life. Here, we speak to

the pair about their new series.

Q Are you excited to be back with series 2?

Jimmy: I just loved working with Shivi last

year and we are so proud of the series we’ve

created. As you would have seen in 2024,

Shivi is a dynamo when it comes to cooking

in the kitchen. She’s full of fun, vibrancy and

can also make an excellent cocktail. We both

get a real buzz about great food and drink

and meeting the brilliant food producers

behind the product. This is what the show

is all about – the journey of what you’re

eating and drinking.

Q You visit local food and drink

producers as part of the show. Why

do you feel it’s important to keep

highlighting the work of regional and

family-run businesses?

Jimmy: It’s so important to keep

highlighting the fantastic producers we

have in this country. Small businesses are so

important to all communities and the more

we support them, the better our countryside

economy will be. Let’s celebrate our rich food

culture and fantastic countryside.

Q How important is it to eat seasonally

and locally, for both our health and the

environment?

Shivi: Eating seasonally is absolutely key.

I’m such a massive advocate for this. There’s

a reason we grow certain produce and

ingredients at diferent times of year. They

flourish at diferent times, and it really does

balance and play back into what our body

needs then and there. Eating locally as well

is really important and it’s not very difcult

to do because now there are so many ways

to preserve food. Things like berries, which

are abundant during the end of summer,

particularly strawberries, you can find

brilliant frozen versions of these. Frozen

peas or asparagus; when out of season, you

can still cook and eat them from frozen. I

strongly encourage eating fresh produce in

season – we’re bang on asparagus season

right now, so make sure it’s coming from the

UK as this will have a greater nutritional

value and flavour. Also, it’s a sustainable way

to eat. It’s far better than eating fruit and veg

that has been imported across the globe.

Q The show celebrates life on the

farm. What role do you think the great

outdoors plays in boosting our physical

and mental wellbeing?

Shivi: Being outdoors really does do

something positive for our mental health

and reducing anxiety. When I come out

of the city, especially when I’m filming

in beautiful Sufolk, I can really feel the

benefits – it’s so grounding. And I think

connecting with nature has us in awe. It’s

all about the small things like hearing the

birds chirping, the streams babbling. I know

it sounds ridiculous, but those little sounds

and things in nature that maybe seem

insignificant have a massive impact on our

wellbeing. It’s really important.

Q Jimmy, how does it feel to have your

home and farm turned into a TV studio

for the second summer in a row?

Jimmy: It’s a dream come true. I think

filming the series on a working farm and

wildlife park really added a new dynamic last

year and it’s something that you don’t really

see in other breakfast shows. As well as having

the backdrop of the farm and all the wonderful

animals, we go beyond the farm gate again to

meet some amazing local producers, as well as

having some fantastic new guests and familiar

faces drop into the studios.

Q Do you have any tips for how people

can reconnect with the outdoors, even if

they’re juggling busy lives?

Shivi: If you’re in the city, like I am, I take

a moment at certain points in the day to go

and sit in the park. I know it’s not the same

as being in the countryside, but it’s the best

we can do. If it’s a hot day, take of your shoes

and just feel the grass on your toes, look up

at the sky and absorb some of that beautiful

vitamin D. I know we rarely get it! But when

we do, that’s even more reason to celebrate

and absorb that.

If you can, and have the means or ability to

do so, jump on a train and go to the

countryside for the day. Maybe take a picnic

with you or a good book. Or if you’ve got kids,

take a ball and really spend time together. Try

to leave all the electronics somewhere else

so you can have uninterrupted time in the

countryside, connecting with each other and

nature. I guarantee you will feel 100% better.

You asked: “What are the

benefits of barre workouts?”

ALICE WEST ANSWERS: “Barre is a low-impact,

full-body workout that strengthens the body in a

really intentional way. It blends elements of ballet,

Pilates, and yoga to improve muscle tone, flexibility,

and balance, without putting stress on your joints.

One of the best things about barre is how it builds

strength through small, controlled movements.

We focus on those deep, often-overlooked muscles,

especially in the core, glutes, and thighs, using light resistance and

high reps. Over time, this builds muscular endurance and lean,

functional strength.

It’s also a game-changer for flexibility. Each class includes

stretches that help release tight hips, hamstrings, and shoulders,

improving posture and reducing the risk of injury. What I really

love about barre is the body awareness it brings. You learn to move

with more control, better alignment, and a deeper connection

to what your body needs. It’s also super accessible, no dance

background or extreme flexibility required. Whether you’re new

to fitness, returning after a break, or just looking for something

that challenges you without being high-impact, barre is a smart,

supportive way to build strength and feel good in your body.”

ANNA MATHUR ANSWERS: “In a world that rarely slows

down, ‘finding balance’ ofers something radical: permission

to stop chasing perfection and begin gently returning to what

matters. Whether we’re juggling family life, hormonal shifts,

work exhaustion or inner pressure, we need to seek ways to

step out of survival mode and into more grounded, sustainable

wellbeing. We don’t need to have perfect calm or tidy routines

– balance isn’t a finish line, nor does it live in your diary. It

lives in your body and it’s a return to your breath, your needs and yourself.

When we create more space, regulate our stress, and reconnect with joy, we

make better decisions, draw healthier boundaries, and move through the

day with more clarity and care.

Try this simple, slow breathing and pacing technique: consciously slow

your breath or your speech to signal to your nervous system that you’re

safe, helping to reduce tension fast. Nutritional support can also gently

underpin emotional and physical wellbeing. I use a supplement featuring

a blend of well-researched plant extracts, core essential vitamins and

bioavailable magnesium to support my nervous system when my plate is

full. The more resourced we are, even in the midst of the mess, the more

fully we can live, love and lead.”

You asked: “I’m struggling with restless legs every night

and it’s interrupting my sleep! How can I manage?”

MEG ESSER ANSWERS: “Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) can be incredibly frustrating, especially

when it robs you of a good night’s sleep. Thankfully, there are simple, natural strategies that may ofer

real relief. Magnesium is one of the most efective tools for managing RLS. It plays a key role in calming

the nervous system and relaxing the muscles. A highly absorbed magnesium supplement taken in the evening can

help settle the body and reduce those uncomfortable sensations that trigger the urge to move your legs. Look for well-

absorbed forms like ionic magnesium citrate or pure magnesium bisglycinate – both excellent options for nighttime use.

Topical magnesium is another great addition to your bedtime routine. Applying a magnesium gel or spray directly to the

legs targets the afected area and may provide fast, soothing relief. For a more immersive option, try a warm bath with

magnesium chloride flakes about 30 minutes before bed. This not only helps ease muscle tension but also signals to your

body that it’s time to wind down. Other ways you can naturally reduce RLS include cutting back on cafeine, especially

in the afternoon and evening, as it can overstimulate the nervous system. Staying active during the day with regular

walks or gentle exercise helps improve circulation and reduces restlessness at night. Incorporating light stretching or

restorative yoga before bed can also help relax tight muscles and ease the urge to move your legs.”

hen it comes to

optimising men’s health,

the foundations are

familiar but essential:

eat well, move regularly, manage stress

and prioritise rest.

“Eating a heart-healthy diet is important,

as it is currently the number one health issue

men face in the UK,” says Bex Seligman, a

naturopath and herbalist (Instagram:

@healthforwealth_bexseligman). “A diet

rich in omega-3, wholegrains, fruit and

vegetables, lean protein, minimal alcohol,

plus avoiding ultra-processed food will

support the heart and overall well-being

whilst reducing the risk of ischaemic

heart disease. Eating a protein-rich diet

is beneficial as it will also support energy

levels and aid in recovery from exercise,

particularly muscle repair and growth.”

Alongside a balanced diet, men can benefit

from targeted nutritional supplements to

maintain long-term health. Here, three

natural health experts share the top

nutrients they recommend for energy,

hormone balance and overall wellbeing.

Magnesium: For energy

and hormonal health

“Magnesium is essential for over 300

metabolic reactions in the body, including

the production of energy,” says Lucia

Stansbie, a nutritional therapist and

Member of the Royal Society of Medicine

(www.foodpowernutrition.com). “Low

levels of magnesium can impact the

production of APT (our cells’ energy

currency). Magnesium also supports

the nervous system function and muscle

relaxation, as well as a steady heartbeat.”

That’s not all that this mighty mineral can

do for our health though. “Magnesium is

linked to improved testosterone levels as it

enhances blood-free testosterone levels by

reducing the binding of testosterone to sex

hormone-binding globulin,” says Lucia.

“This means that more testosterone is

available for the body to use. Magnesium is

also involved in cellular signalling within

the Leydig cells (the cells in the testes

producing testosterone), so healthy levels

are crucial for testosterone production.”

Saw palmetto: For

prostate health and

hormonal support

Saw palmetto is a traditional herbal

remedy that’s become increasingly

popular for men’s health. “Its main use

is to reduce the symptoms of prostatic

hyperplasia (BPH),” says Lucia Stansbie.

“This is a benign prostate enlargement

common in men over 50.” Saw Palmetto

works by inhibiting the enzyme

5-alpha-reductase, which converts

testosterone into its more potent form,

dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Lucia adds:

“When DHT levels are elevated, men

can experience an enlarged prostate and

marked hair loss. One of the symptoms

of an enlarged prostate is increased

urination, including waking up at night

to use the toilet, which can disrupt

sleep. Using saw palmetto can help to

modulate hormones and reduce these

symptoms. I would always recommend

consulting with a healthcare

professional before starting to use saw

palmetto, in order to avoid interaction

with other medications.”

Zinc: For immunity, vitality

and reproductive health

“Zinc is an essential trace mineral

that plays a vital role in men’s

health, particularly in immune

function, hormone regulation and

reproductive health,” explains

qualified, registered nutritionist Lara

Buckle (www.thewellnessdetective.

co.uk). “It supports the production

of testosterone, a hormone crucial

for muscle mass, libido and energy

levels. Research has shown that low

zinc levels are linked to reduced

testosterone and impaired sperm

quality. Zinc also functions as a

powerful antioxidant, helping to

combat oxidative stress and support

healthy ageing. It’s involved in

numerous enzymatic reactions,

contributing to processes such as

wound healing, DNA synthesis and

cell growth. For men, zinc is especially

important for prostate health, with

high concentrations found in the

prostate gland. Some evidence suggests

it may help modulate inflammation

and support normal function. While

zinc can be obtained through the

diet – particularly from red meat,

shellfish and dairy – those following

vegetarian or low-meat diets may

benefit from supplementation, as plant-

based sources of zinc are less readily

absorbed by the body.”

Supplements can certainly be powerful

allies when chosen wisely and taken

alongside a balanced diet with regular

exercise. Whether you’re looking to

support energy, protect your heart, or

maintain hormonal balance as you age,

these natural health heroes can help

you stay at your best.

Y

our heart contracts

approximately 100,000 times

every day to ensure that blood

and essential nutrients are

delivered to every part of your body.

This tireless work makes it all the

more important to protect your heart

throughout life. Scientific research

suggests that including omega-3 fatty

acids in your daily diet – either by eating

oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, or

sardines, or by taking a high-quality

supplement – can help maintain a

healthy heart and cardiovascular system.

Lower blood pressure and

triglyceride levels

There are several reasons for this.

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown

to help support normal blood pressure,

which reduces strain on the heart muscle.

This, in turn, lowers the risk of long-term

cardiovascular damage. In addition,

omega-3 fatty acids help reduce blood

levels of triglycerides, which are the most

common type of fat found in both food and

the human body. When triglyceride levels

are too high, the risk of developing arterial

plaque increases. Over time, plaque can

build up inside the blood vessels, leading

to atherosclerosis and increasing the risk

of serious cardiovascular events such as

heart attacks or strokes.

Anti-inflammatory properties

In addition to these efects, omega-3

fatty acids also have anti-inflammatory

properties that help counteract chronic

inflammation in the vessel walls, a known

contributor to atherosclerosis. When

plaque accumulates, it can trigger an

inflammatory response that worsens the

condition and increases the risk of blood

clots, which may block the arteries and

cause acute heart problems.

Some clinical studies even suggest that

omega-3 fatty acids may help stabilise

heart rhythm and reduce the risk of

arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death,

particularly in individuals with existing

heart conditions.

Recommended by heart

organisations

Because of these well-documented

cardiovascular benefits, organisations

such as the British Heart Foundation

(BHF) and the American Heart

Association (AHA) recommend eating

oily fish at least twice a week. If you

don’t enjoy eating fish or find it difcult

to include in your diet regularly, fish

oil supplements ofer a convenient and

efective alternative.

Fish oil with free fatty acids

works faster

Most fish oil supplements contain

omega-3 fatty acids in their natural

triglyceride form. Before the body can

absorb and utilize these fats, it must

convert them into free fatty acids through

a digestive process. However, not all of

this conversion is efcient. Some high-

quality supplements contain omega-3 in

its free form, meaning they are already

ready for absorption. This ensures faster

uptake and reduces potential waste

caused by incomplete digestion.

Whether you prefer to get your omega-3

from fish or from a supplement, making it

a consistent part of your daily routine is a

smart and proactive way to support long-

term cardiovascular health.

WHY FISH OIL IS YOUR

If you want to reduce your risk of

cardiovascular disease, regular intake

of omega-3 fatty acids is one of the most

efective things you can do. These essential

fats, primarily found in oily fish and

fish oil supplements, play a vital role in

maintaining heart health and supporting

the circulatory system in a number of

important ways, says Bjørn Madsen
