SAM PITASSI’S

“IMPECCABLE”

CAREER

NEIGHBORS

MAGAZINE

WILL YOU HELP?

Those who look forward to time-honored traditions such as the Rose Presentation,

set for Wednesday, July 9 as part of the 132nd Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

celebration in Melrose Park, will also have the opportunity to experience a new exhibit

featuring apparitions of the Virgin Mary around the world created by Blessed Carlo Acutis.

How’s the magazine doing?

People ask me that question a lot. I always answer the same way: “It’s actually doing great.”

And it is. It took two decades to get here but we made it—together. Even through a pandemic, we never

missed a beat. We are just weeks away from the 23rd anniversary of Neighbors and I still get excited

about every new advertiser, every new drop location and every time someone says, “I think I’ve tried

just about all of the businesses in your magazine,” “That chocolate shop is fabulous,” “How is it that

I’ve never been to Scudiero’s before,” or “I just bought a car from the neighborhood guy.” I’ve filled a

file cabinet with handwritten notes, have a folder with saved emails too awesome to delete and when

someone tells me that they’ve kept a special issue or can’t wait for the next issue to come out, my face

still turns red because it’s really hard to believe.

But at the end of the day, maybe I’ve been too good for my own good. I’m an English major not a

magician; and what Inlander Publications Editor Randy Craig wrote in his 2005 feature story about

Neighbors remains true today: “The driving force behind Neighbors remains the content. Valentino

determined that a lot of information was not getting picked up by the local papers or distributed broadly

by local governments. The donation of 500 knitted garments for newborns...is not likely to find much

exposure in the local papers. In Neighbors, it receives a full page story and a photo. Neighbors isn’t

about competing with other media. It’s about filling the niche left by them.” Not much has changed

about my thinking since that story appeared in print just after “the tiny monthly magazine” was

recognized with a Peter Lisagor Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. Many other things,

however, have changed. Like the tremendous cost of producing the tiny magazine.

Unlike Johnson Publishing Company, founded in 1942 by John H. Johnson with a $500 loan, using

his mother’s furniture as collateral, Neighbors will never be an empire with 1.3 million readers but it is

somewhat of an “institution,” long-standing and ingrained in the community. It’s always been free and,

for however long it lasts, it will always be a free publication. Perhaps that was a mistake; and maybe,

because of our impressive readership of more than 20,000, award-winning stories and a Facebook

following of more than 3,000, advertisers should be paying considerably more. The staggering truth is,

our advertising rates have not increased in 23 years—perhaps another mistake. But that’s me. That’s

who I am. I try not to think about how many pizzas Jack and Nella have to make in a blistering hot

kitchen to pay for their ad; I try not to think about how many disgusting moldy sump pumps Permidt

plumbers to fix to pay for their ad;. And I try not to think about all the space and ads I have given away

to amazing causes, non-profits and organizations that would’ve faced greater challenges without the

reach of Neighbors magazine. So I am asking for your help. Starting next month, paper prices will

increase yet again and our GoFundMe page will be live. If you’ve ever kept an issue, loved a story, been

uplifted by a column or you would’ve paid for a copy of Neighbors on the newstand—I hope you will

consider supporting the Neighbors crowdfunding campaign to help us remain a viable, affordable,

integral part of the community. As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so

much.” Watch for the link. Give if you can.

Thank you in advance for being such great neighbors all these years.

“Congratulations on

an impeccable

career,” said

Melrose park

Mayor ron serpico to

retiring police Chief

sam pitassi at the

June 23 Village Board

meeting.

Mayor Serpico, at right, with

new Police Chief Anthony Greco

(left) thanked Sam Pitassi for a

record 51 years of service with

the Melrose Park Police

Department.

It was a bittersweet interview with retired Melrose Park Police Chief

Sam Pitassi on the day he cleaned out his office at 1 N. Broadway—

just a few weeks before he would lead the 132nd Feast of Our Lady of

Mount Carmel as he has done since 2007. Boxes of mementos and

more than five decades of service and memories walked out the door

with him that day but, without a quiver in his voice, he said with utmost

certainty, “It’s definitely time.”

Inspired at a young age by his father’s service in the Navy and his

godfather’s service in the Marines and the Chicago Police Department,

Sam’s family moved to Melrose Park in 1956, becoming one of the

original owners of a home in the new Winston Park subdivision. Sam

was a student at Proviso East High School during a time when Chicago

as well as the suburbs were experiencing tumultuous racial unrest and

riots. Melrose Park’s policemen were among those mobilized to the

Maywood high school and Sam was in awe of their courage and

demeanor during this intense chapter in the city’s history. Armed with

degrees from Triton College and Lewis University, he decided to begin

taking police exams and follow in their footsteps.

Originally hired by the Village of Elk Grove, Sam graduated

from the police academy and worked for nine months before

jumping at the chance to work in his hometown. A patrolman

from 1974 to 1982, he never tested for a promotion; he had

only hoped that one day there would be an opportunity to

work as a detective. That day not only came in 1983 but Sam’s

passion for the position continued to pay off as he rose to the

rank of Sgt. Detective, Lt. Detective and Detective Supervisor,

never imagining he would be sworn in as Deputy Chief in

1999 and Chief in 2007. His official title became Director of

Police in 2016—few others in law enforcement have careers

that span more than 50 incredible years. “I really do think it’s

unprecedented,” said Mayor Serpico. “He has had an

impeccable career, never suspended, never reprimanded and

represented Melrose Park with great integrity.”

Asked to look back and reflect on any accomplishments

that stand out, Sam is quick to tell good stories about his police

partners, mentors and heroes but he could only sum up his

career in just a few words: “I wanted to leave the department

better than I found it. And I think I did that.” No doubt many

agreed with him as the Village Board room steadily filled up

with old friends, neighbors, retired police officers, current

officers and Village staff who came to wish him well. In the first

row, however, was what makes him especially proud: his family.

“My daughter is an amazing teacher, my son has been on the

police department for 12 years already and my wife and I look

forward to spending time with our grandchildren,” said Pitassi.

“I’m 73 now, it’s time for new thinking in the police

department and I’m an old-fashioned thinking guy. Chief Greco

knows exactly what to do. As a Commander for the WESTAF

Homicide Task Force (West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force)

and recipient of the FBI-LEEDA award, residents can be sure

that Melrose Park’s officers will be well-prepared to meet the

challenges of modern policing. He has the best working with

him: new Deputy Chiefs Rodriguez and Scudiero, Watch

Commanders Lt. Nocita and Rodriguez and new Lt. Anzaldi will

take the department to the next level,” added Pitassi. “What a

tremendous honor it has been to work in Melrose Park.”
