Dear Esteemed Readers,

Taking on the role of Editor-in-Chief stirs a mix of emotions.

This Anniversary Issue marks a big step for Campus Connect.

Let me begin by sharing a happy moment for us at upGrad

Campus.

NIRF recently released its 2023 Ranking for various domains,

and it’s my pleasure to inform you that most of the Institutions

which are an integral part of the upGrad Campus Story paved

their path in the rankings; examples include:

a) MAHE (an Institute which has trusted our Lecture Capture

System since long for its complete ecosystem) got ranked 6th

in Universities

b) LPU (our 1st partner Institute for our Joint Degree program)

got ranked 38th in Universities, and 46th Overall

c) NITTE and Bharath Institute of Higher Education &

Research (our recent addition to Joint Degree umbrella) got

65th and 66th Rankings among Universities

d) The list goes on and on; even two total pages might not

be enough to congratulate our partner institutions for their

performance because our 30+ Partner Institutes have

performed exceptionally well in the NIRF 2023 Rankings.

I am looking forward to more of our partner institutions shining

at various levels and benchmarks, and I would like to thank the

trust that most of them have shown us in our journey.

This edition spotlights key figures from partner institutions

nationwide who’ve been instrumental in our journey. Their

belief, insights, and support have guided us. As we dedicate

our 1st Anniversary Edition to them, we extend heartfelt

gratitude to all the stakeholders who took the time to write

articles and share their thoughts to embed in our magazine.

Campus Connect’s legacy is rich and filled with insightful

content. With my team, I’m committed to upholding and

refreshing this legacy. We aim to be a beacon for educational

which has reached 3000+ Indian campuses in the last year.

As we reflect upon this journey, it is impossible not to

acknowledge the unwavering support and trust we have

received from our Partnered Institutions. Their continuous

faith in us has driven the success of upGrad Campus and the

positive impact on our 20,000+ learners in terms of learning

and career outcomes.

This past year, Campus Connect has evolved to become

a reliable mode of communication and has driven the story

The Role of UGC, AICTE, and NCERT in

Creating Framework

The UGC, AICTE, and NCERT are the three major regulatory

bodies in the education sector. The UGC is responsible

for regulating universities and colleges in the country,

while the AICTE oversees technical education institutions.

The NCERT is responsible for developing curricula and

instructional materials for school education.

By working together, these regulatory bodies can create

comprehensive

framework

that

covers

all

levels

of education, from school to higher education. The

framework can be designed to identify the skills required

in different sectors and industries, and then map them

to the corresponding education and training programs.

This will help ensure that students are equipped with the

necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their

chosen fields. This collaborative effort is all set to lead

to a more skilled and productive workforce, contributing

to the growth and development of the country.

All in all, the Ministry of Education’s call for UGC, AICTE,

and NCERT to join hands in creating a framework for

mapping skills is a step in the right direction. By aligning

education and training programs with industry requirements,

the skills gap can be reduced, employability can be

improved, and the vast talent pool of our country can

be better utilized. On an optimistic front, this collaborative

effort is all set to lead to a more skilled and productive

workforce, contributing to the growth and development

of the country.

recently

emphasized the need for a collaborative

effort by the University Grants Commission (UGC),

the All India Council for Technical Education

(AICTE), and the National Council of Educational

Research and Training (NCERT) to create a

framework for mapping skills in the country.

This framework will help ensure that education and

training programs align with the skills needed in

various industries and sectors, thus reducing the

skills gap and increasing employability. The minister

made the comments in an interaction with reporters

ahead of the third G-20 Education Working Group

Meeting where the priority areas for deliberations

were tech-enabled learning, the future of work, and

research collaborations, among others.

Why is a Framework for Mapping Skills

Necessary?

Currently, there is a huge mismatch between the practical

skills taught in educational institutions and those required

by employers in the corporate landscape. This skills gap

not only affects job prospects but also results in the

underutilization of the available talent pool. This creates

the need for the frame work for mapping skills, which

can effectively reconcile this gap by aligning education

and training programs with the skill sets that various

industries demand.

Risks, Challenges, and

Opportunities in the Adoption

of Generative AI

enerative AI’ and “Prompt Engineering” have

become the buzzwords in today’s rapidly evolving

tech landscape. Beyond just ChatGPT, we see

the widespread adoption of AI models like Midjourney,

Stable Diffusion, Github Copilot, and others. With the

continuous influx of large language models (LLMs) into the

market, the competition in the AI space is escalating. For

instance,

consider

Anthropic

AI’s

Claude,

which

backed by Google. It boasts a higher token limit

and excels in code generation when compared to

ChatGPT. At the same time, ChatGPT stands out

with its extensive language support and a plethora

of plugins designed for specific tasks. And let’s not forget

about

HuggingGPT,

which

integrates

LLMs

tackle complex tasks. The list of potential use cases

for these AI models is vast. However, the critical

question remains: how do these advancements in AI

technology impact us and various industries at large?

PREDOMINANT CONCERNS

• Susceptibility to bias: If the training data used is

of subpar quality or exhibits inherent bias, the model

is prone to generate biased responses. As a result,

industries are diligently working to implement governance

mechanisms to ensure that the outputs generated

by these models are not offensive or discriminatory.

• Carbon footprint: The training of such models demands

massive computational power, contributing to significant

environmental costs. As per nnlabs.org, GPT-3, which

boasts of a staggering 175 billion parameters, needed 355

years of computational time on a single processor and

used 284,000 kWh of energy during its training process. To

provide some context, a typical Indian household utilizes

approximately 900 kWh of electricity on a monthly basis.

• Incorrect information: These large language models

have been known to produce factually incorrect information

numerous

occasions.

The

most

infamous

among them was when Google Bard listed down

the discoveries made by James Webb Space Telescope.

It remains to be seen how industries will navigate

and

mitigate

this

challenge

effectively.

BUSINESS CHALLENGES

• Content Ownership: One major concern with generative

AI is the ownership of content and the potential leakage

of sensitive company data. This apprehension has led

companies such as JP Morgan, Amazon, and Verizon to

ban the usage of ChatGPT within their organizations.

• Fear of Job Loss: There is a prevailing fear of job

displacement due to the widespread adoption of AI

technologies. However, this fear is not unique to AI. Historically,

the introduction of new technologies, be it locomotives, the

internet, or smartphones, has disrupted job markets while

simultaneously creating new categories of employment

opportunities. As Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, points

out, generative AI excels at tasks but struggle to perform

complete jobs. Thus, human intervention remains crucial.

• Quality of Output: The quality of output from generative AI

models heavily relies on the input prompts, making the skill

of crafting effective prompts and chaining them together

a crucial skill for the future. From a business perspective,

organizations should consider upskilling their employees

to focus on value-added tasks rather than repetitive ones.

BUSINESS IMPACT AND ADOPTION

According to a report by McKinsey, the economic impact of

AI is expected to increase by 15-40%, with approximately

94% of organizations already incorporating AI in some

capacity, particularly in finance and IT. This demonstrates

the substantial influence of AI on various sectors. Companies

are grappling with the decision of whether to rent, build,

or buy AI models. Given the high costs associated with

building such models from scratch, most firms opt for

utilizing open-source LLMs and tailoring them to their

specific needs by tweaking parameters to address domain-

specific use cases. However, it’s crucial to note that

there are internal concepts and data unique to each firm

that third-party models may not be trained on, necessitating

customization based on specific use cases. Nonetheless,

many companies are reaping tangible benefits from the

adoption of AI, particularly in areas such as security and risk

management.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, similar to any other technological advancement,

organizations that embrace generative AI are poised to

benefit significantly from it. While challenges exist, they

can be overcome with thoughtful governance, training, and

customization efforts. As AI continues to shape the future of

industries, those who harness its power effectively are likely to

stay ahead in the competitive landscape.
