Why are artist’s merchandise so bad and what
can we do to fix this?
When we first examined the music
merchandise market during Covid, we
realized how poor the quality was and
how the product choices were limited to
textiles, CDs, vinyl, and tourist-like
knickknacks.
Fans complain of overinflated prices, bad
quality, and generally felt ripped off. They
take to online platforms, airing their
anger and disappointment, forcing artists
to address the issues head-on. Which
some do but many just ignore.

Both come with a downside in a climate where fans are consumers in
their everyday lives as well, and they increasingly understand the lack
of originality, authenticity, creativity, and value for money.

White labelling is where you simply put your name, or logo
on the product and push it out into the market. Voila!
Many big artists have been caught out not knowing anything
about the product, let alone the safety of its ingredients with
beauty products.
These products are just ghosts. Zero creative input or
originality from inception to launch.

Most lines created by brand factories with famous faces are not
designed to be longstanding businesses.
A-list celebrities are often paid handsomely to endorse products.
For them its simply good business. Some celebrities endorse
products that have nothing to do with their personal interests or
expertise, which can come across as inauthentic or even desperate.
The traditional celebrity endorsement is no longer enough for fans.
Consumers need to know there’s expertise or/ at the very least/ a
genuine personal interest in what’s being sold to them.

its generic, unimaginative designs — so much so that some fans have begun
redesigning and selling their own merch inspired by the singer.
More recently, Doja Cat took to Twitter to respond to people who were
criticizing the designs and price point of the merchandise from her new
album, Planet Her. “[The\ merch is bad. i’m aware/” she wrote. When a fan
asked/ “who is designing this batch of merchandise?” Doja Cat responded that
she didn’t know.
