HATFIELD ESTATE DIRECTOR
As Estate Director, I am delighted that you
have chosen to become a part of our wonderful
Hatfield Park community. Whether you are
here to live, work, meet or relax, I hope you
will enjoy your time with us.
Hatfeld Park Estate has evolved steadily over a period
exceeding 400 years. History has shaped not only the
place but also our values. Our team today, however,
whilst conscious of our heritage, is frmly focussed on the
present and the future.
Our aim is for our tenants, partners and visitors to enjoy
Hatfeld and share our enthusiasm for its many special
qualities, not only our historic buildings but also the rich
natural environment which is to be found within Hatfeld
Park itself.
We have curated a varied programme of events
throughout the year, designed to appeal to all and aligned
with one of our own goals – that of creating Vibrant
Communities.
I do hope you enjoy reading this guide, myself and the
team here at Hatfeld Park look forward to welcoming
you soon.
HATFIELD
HOUSE
Hatfeld House, once used for entertaining the Royal
Court is, to this day, splendidly decorated with State
Rooms rich in paintings, fne furniture and tapestries.
Superb examples of Jacobean craftsmanship can be seen
throughout Hatfeld House such as the Grand Staircase
with its fne carving and the rare stained glass window in
the private chapel. Displayed throughout the House are
many historic mementos collected over the centuries by
the Cecils, one of England’s foremost political families.
The House features a wealth of architectural detail,
portraits and artifacts of international renown such
as the Rainbow Portrait, the Marble Hall and the
Chinese Bedroom.
Today, Hatfeld House is the private home of the
7th Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury.
This fine Jacobean
House adjoining
the site of the Old
Palace of Hatfield
was built in 1611 by
Robert Cecil, 1st
Earl of Salisbury
The Gardens are
managed by Lady
Salisbury and
her Park and
Gardens Team
The picture-perfect gardens of Hatfeld House date
from the early 17th century when Robert Cecil
employed John Tradescant the Elder to collect plants
from all over Europe for his new home. The trees,
bulbs, plants and fruit trees, which had never before
been grown in England, have crafted the inspiring and
fragrant gardens you can explore and enjoy today.
Open for visitors from April to September and at
other key times throughout the year, the gardens
ofer a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the stunning
Woodland Garden, West Garden and the private East
Garden, which is open on selected days throughout
the season.
THE
GARDENS
With extensive parklands, picturesque views and
bridges, the Broadwater, ancient trees and an
abundance of wildlife, Hatfeld Park ofers a beautiful,
tranquil area of natural beauty to while away the
hours. You may wish to visit the very spot where, in
1558, Queen Elizabeth I was believed to have been
delivered news of her sister’s death and her own
succession to the throne, under an ancient oak tree.
The stunning, historical woodland that surrounds
Hatfeld House is yours to explore with three
beautiful walks of varying lengths that evolve through
the seasons, giving you the opportunity to spot many
diferent species of fora and fauna.
