SKILLS FOR EMPLOYMENT

On our qualification courses, every learner has

the opportunity to develop essential skills for

employment. We focus on helping you identify

and build your transferable skills through

a variety of activities, work experience,

volunteering, and projects.

You’ll gain problem-solving and teamwork

skills, learn to reflect on your progress,

actively participate in your learning, and

manage yourself confidently in today’s modern

workplace. By the end of the course, you’ll

have real experiences to add to your CV and

the confidence to talk to employers about your

skills and knowledge.

We are also making sure that all courses

provide you with opportunities to develop

useful sustainability knowledge and skills.

Feedback is that these are increasingly

valued by employers, as well as being

useful in life more generally.

FLEXIBILITY

Our part-time courses are designed to fit

around your life. Many run during school hours,

with some evening options too, so whether

you’re working, looking after family, or juggling

other commitments, there’s something to suit

you. Our main campus is in Whitley at 330

Northumberland Avenue, with parking available

and easy access by bus. We also run classes in

community venues across Reading, and some

of our courses are available online.

learners the opportunity

to showcase their work

Our ceramics studio is

located on the ground floor

at New Directions College,

and it’s a relaxing and

welcoming space for all our

ASSESSMENT DAY

To ensure you are placed on the right course at the right level,

you will be invited to attend one of our assessment days. We will

check your suitability for the course and it will provide you with

an opportunity to talk to the subject Tutor who will review your

application and provide you with further advice and guidance.

OFFER OF A PLACE

Once you have been successful in securing your place, you will be

invited to enrol. Our team will support you with your enrolment

and you must be prepared to present any required evidence to

demonstrate your eligibility for course fee remission. You will need

to complete an enrolment form and sign a learning agreement.

Course fees can be found next to the

course listing in the course guide and

on our website. If you are on a low

income, receiving benefits, or actively

looking for work, you may be entitled to

reduced course fees or your course may

be fully funded and therefore free of

charge to you.

LEARNER FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Learners may be eligible for financial support

that covers:

• The cost of OFSTED registered childcare

when you are at the college

• Travel costs to and from college

• Essential course materials

To check your eligibility, we will ask you

to share information with us and show us

evidence. All evidence must be dated within

the last 3 months.

ADULT LEARNER LOANS

If you are aged 19 and over and studying at

level 3 and above, and you are not entitled

to funding through the Free Courses for

Jobs Offer, you may be able to apply for an

Advanced Learner Loan to support the costs

of tuition fees. Your household income isn’t

taken into account, and you won’t have

to pay anything back until your income is

over £25,000 a year. Please ask us for more

information.

PAYING FOR YOUR COURSE

Fees must be paid in advance unless:

• An instalment agreement has been

authorised and implemented; or

• Confirmation of a loan agreement is in

place with the Adult Learner Loans; or

• A purchase order for the training fees has

been received from an employer or

government agency

PAYMENT METHODS

New Directions College operates a cashless

payment system and no longer accepts cash

or cheques as a method of payment. Our

preferred method of payment is by debit

card or credit card or standing orders where

appropriate.

Receipts will be issued to the registered

learner with whom the contract for service

provision has been made unless an employer

or other organisation is sponsoring an

enrolment, in which case a receipt will be

issued on receipt of payment accordingly.

Payment will be credited to the learner’s

account even if actual payment has been

made by a third party on behalf of the learner.

STANDING ORDERS

For courses lasting 10 weeks or more and

costing over £80.00, payment by Standing

order is available. Twenty five percent (25%)

of the course fee will need to be paid on

enrolment with the remaining amount divided

over 3 payments.

It is the learner’s responsibility to set up the

standing order and ensure payments are made

to clear the outstanding balance before the

date at which the course finishes.

Failure to do so will result in the enrolment

being cancelled and the learner remaining

liable for the outstanding debt. Learners may

be excluded for non-payment of fees.

New Directions College reserves the right

to refuse this payment option in all cases.

Our main offer of digital skills is accredited and

help adult learners know the basics and feel

who want or need accredited learning in digital

SUPPORTED LEARNING

Our range of supported learning courses have

been specifically designed for adults with a

learning difficulty and or disability. The courses

on offer are typically non-accredited and focus

on developing skills for independent living

and employment. The course fees have been

subsidised by our community learning grant

in order to make these courses affordable and

accessible. We work with a range of partners,

including Mind, Autism Berkshire and the

Adult Social Care Teams in Reading to support

learners with their learning journey. We are

also able to facilitate a range of support needs

through our learner support function. Please

be sure to highlight your specific needs when

you apply.

EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT

Employability skills are the core skills required to

gain and maintain employment. We specialise

in supporting adults who are either currently

unemployed or underemployed and looking for

career development and promotion. Working

with a range of Reading based employers, such

as Thames Water and De Vere, we deliver a

range of skills development programmes that

also offer interviews for actual job vacancies,

significantly increasing your chances of securing

employment.

We also provide training and development for:

• Effective communication

We work with Job Centre Plus and the National

Careers Service to support you to find jobs and

plan your career.

a fully equipped pottery studio and a dedicated dressmaking and

sewing room, spaces designed to ignite your imagination and support

Drawing and Painting

This 10-week course offers a comprehensive introduction to the world of drawing and painting,

Sculpting in Clay

This sculpting in clay course is designed for beginners and experienced artists alike. You will learn

the basics of hand-building and sculpting techniques using the various tools needed for shaping,

Throwing for Beginners

This pottery throwing course for beginners is the perfect way to learn the basics of throwing. The

course will teach learners the fundamentals of throwing, centering, trimming and turning their own

pottery. Through hands-on instruction, learners will learn the basic techniques of wheel-throwing and

gain an understanding of the properties of clay. They will also learn about the tools and techniques

Throwing for Beginners / Improvers

This pottery throwing course for beginners/ Improvers is the perfect way to practice and embed the

skills learned on the beginners’ course and develop further throwing techniques. Through hands-on

instruction, you will learn further fundamentals of throwing, centering, trimming and turning, and

expand skills to throw more challenging forms. As you progress, you’ll be guided through the basic

stages of glazing and firing your pieces. The course will provide learners with the opportunity to

practice and refine their skills in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Topics covered: throwing,

centering, trimming, turning, clay properties, basic glaze techniques. All materials are provided.

Please bring a sketchbook or notebook for idea development and taking notes.
