OUR MISSION
To support, develop, expand and
unite local CASA programs in
recruiting and training volunteers to
advocate for Tennessee's children
who have been abused and
neglected.
OUR VALUES
Greetings
Tennessee CASA and the network of 31 local CASA programs serving 59 counties has had
many accomplishments this past year. We appreciate this opportunity each year to share
the Tennessee CASA Annual Report and to honor our partners and stakeholders in child
welfare.
CASA programs across Tennessee had 1,568 volunteers giving 100,678 hours to advocate
for 5,216 children. This is an increase of 24% in CASA appointments for new children, a
9.2% increase in new volunteers, and an 18% increase in volunteer hours. The increase in
new CASA appointments and volunteers is a direct result of the increased funding to
$40,000 per county provided by the General Assembly for FY 24.
The increase in volunteer hours is a testament to how complex and intense these cases
are. These children deserve our best efforts and their families have many serious issues to
address. To support this growth and increased advocacy, Tennessee CASA provided 11
training opportunities with 1,018 participants. In addition, we have connected the network
with dozens of training opportunities through Tennessee Centers of Excellence, AIMHiTN,
the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Tennessee Commission on Children & Youth,
UTSWORPS, Children’s Advocacy Centers of Tennessee, TAADAS, the Tennessee
Department of Children’s Services, and the Tennessee Nonprofit Network. All of these
organizations provide valuable expertise in child welfare and nonprofit management.
There has also been growth and transition in the network. CASA of the Tennessee Valley
expanded from three counties to six counties when it assumed the counties previously
served by UCHRA. Likewise, the counties served by SETHRA became an independent
nonprofit organization called CASA of the Sequatchie Valley. Gibson County is now
serving Carroll County and developed its own nonprofit organization called CASA of
Midwest Tennessee.
This year will be difficult. Tennessee CASA has already had a funding cut of $100,000 due
to the dramatic decline of federal VOCA funds. More than half of our local CASA
programs receive VOCA funding that will likely be cut at the end of this fiscal year on
June 30, 2025. This is a cut that all victim-serving agencies are facing. We are
collaborating together to ask Tennessee to provide funding to serve victims of crime. All
of the agencies depend on each other for the services they provide. We ask Tennessee for
support for these vulnerable children and adults.
Tennessee CASA believes in celebrating success. While we have many challenges ahead,
we always want to celebrate the CASA staff, volunteers, and board members across the
state for their dedication to the CASA mission. Every child deserves a consistent, caring
adult in their life who will advocate to ensure they are in a safe and stable home.
