his issue we are getting geared up for the CMSUK

Conference taking place on 27-28 March, exploring

the theme of ‘The Identity Journey’ and showcasing

the incredible speakers who will be delivering at the

Conference. Each speaker has a unique story to share and

their thought-provoking talks will explore a wide variety of

themes around identity and rehabilitation.

The Occupational Therapy Service are the headline sponsor for the

Conference, so we caught up with clinical director Lucy Leonard, to

find out more about what the theme this year means to them as an

organisation.

We also share the results of a recent workshop that was facilitated by

CMSUK to explore research priorities within the case management

community. The outcomes from this collaborative workshop have

formed the basis of CMSUK’s top 10 research priorities going forward.

You can read more on page 28.

We also highlight the Wheelchair Skills College, run by wheelchair-

user and Churchill Fellow Pete Donnelly, who provides training for

new wheelchair users, helping to teach important handling skills that

will empower wheelchair users to lead their lives confidently.

You will also find product highlights, case studies and training courses

available. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to

highlight your work within the case management community by

emailing Ros@CaseManagementUK.co.uk.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

The Occupational Therapy Service

are the proud headline sponsors of

the CMSUK Conference this year. We

caught up with clinical director, Lucy

resonates with The Occupational

Therapy Service, and what she

believes case managers will take

away from this year’s conference

CAN YOU PLEASE TELL US A BIT

ABOUT THE OCCUPATIONAL SERVICE

AND YOUR ROLE…

I am an occupational therapist first and foremost,

and I am the clinical director at The Occupational

Therapy Service.

We are a company run by three occupational

therapy directors, and we have over 75 years of

experience between us. We have 130 associate

occupational therapists across the UK, and we

work closely with case managers, providing

occupational therapy assessments, interventions,

and rehabilitation for their clients.

Our associate occupational therapists have a

range of specialities, including hand therapy,

neurological rehabilitation, orthopaedics,

paediatrics, spinal injury vocational rehab – a

whole range.

We provide rehabilitation programmes for people

and work within multidisciplinary teams: case

managers, physiotherapists, neuropsychologists,

speech and language therapists and more.

We employ three clinical coordinators who are

all occupational therapists. They deal with the

enquiries and referrals that come into the office, we

fully understand a client’s clinical needs, and can

match them with the right occupational therapist,

in the right geographical area. We have recently

taken on a Clinical Lead (Claire Lowther) to support

the office team, an occupational of 25 years with

a huge range of experience across all sectors and

Claire has been a case manager herself.

The feedback we get is that we are known for

being friendly, supportive, and responsive, and

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

more and more case managers are choosing to

work with us.

As well as undertaking clinical work, we provide

training, work with several charities, support

NHS organisations, local authorities, and we also

provide consultancy for manufacturers, retailers

and distributors of equipment and adaptations

relevant to occupational therapy. So, we have a

very broad scope of occupational therapy across

the business.

HOW DOES ‘THE IDENTITY JOURNEY’

THEME RESONATE WITH YOUR

WORK?

A person’s identity is a core principle of

occupational therapy, because occupational

therapists focus on enabling people to return to

meaningful activities that are based on their values,

their preferences and their cultural backgrounds.

In order to do that, we make sure our occupational

therapists conduct a holistic assessment to gather

information on the person’s cultural, social, spiritual

and occupational history, as well as their past

experience and how that has shaped their life. This

forms the goals that we set for them to achieve in

their rehabilitation.

A thorough assessment enables us to set goals that

reflect a person’s identity and their aspirations.

As occupational therapists, we recognise that

rehabilitation isn’t just about the physical recovery,

but about restoring people’s roles in life and their

routines - that might be a role as a mum, as an

employee, as a partner, a friend, a church-goer,

an artist, a horse rider - the things that are really

important to people. Occupational therapists can

set goals, and help people to restore their identity

after injury.

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR

SOMEONE TO RECLAIM THEIR

IDENTITY?

I think it’s incredibly important for people to

restore their identity as close to pre-injury levels as

possible. People want to have choices and exert

influence over their lives and their environment,

people aren’t passive recipients of external forces

or social structures, we want them to be active

participants in their rehabilitation. We want them

LUCY LEONARD

to shape their own experience and outcomes, and

that is where occupational therapy will support

somebody and work in partnership with them.

It’s about giving people autonomy – the ability

to make decisions for themselves without being

influenced by external constraints, and thinking

outside the box when they are setting their goals,

because clients might not appreciate what they are

able to achieve.

We also help people to reflect on themselves, to

evaluate their own beliefs, their circumstances,

to help them make informed choices. It’s about

influencing their own lives and their environment at

home, and making choices about what they do in

everyday life.

WHAT DO YOU THINK CASE

MANAGERS WILL TAKE AWAY THE

CONFERENCE?

I think the main thing is the quality of the speakers,

and the broad range of people who are going

to be delivering presentations over the two days.

There are going to be lots of lived experiences

shared which is crucial to understand our client’s

journey, as well breakout sessions, to allow people

to get fully immersed in learning about identity,

and that theme is going to run right through the

two days.

I think it’s important to go with an open mind, and

to listen and learn. And to learn from each other as

well, because there are going to be so many case

managers there who have such a lot of experience

to share from their practice.

Also, there many exhibitors who will be keen to

speak to the case managers to understand what

they need to support their clients and enhance their

multidisciplinary team – if they interact with lots

of exhibitors, they will be able to get the full range

of understanding of what’s out there to support

rehabilitation and improve outcomes.

The Occupational Therapy Service will be there

over the two days, and we are looking forward to

speaking with case managers, solicitors and other

colleagues, so we invite everyone to come and

see us on our stand so we can discuss how The

Occupational Therapy Service can work together

with you.

THE OCCUPATIONAL

THERAPY SERVICE

IDENTITY

Identity is at the heart of what we do as

occupational therapists, it is what we help

our clients rediscover, redefine and embrace

after an injury. But what about our identity as

a company? For years The OT Service has

been our trusted name, representing quality

rehabilitation for those recovering from

injury. But as we’ve grown, we’ve realised

our name should reflect not only what we

do, but the heart of our mission. From now

on, we proudly reintroduce ourselves as The

Occupational Therapy Service - a name that

emphasises the full scope of who we are. The

word ‘occupational’ highlights the holistic,

person-centred focus of our work - restoring

purpose, meaning and identity for those we

serve. Whilst our name has evolved, our

mission remains unchanged: to provide the

highest quality rehabilitation services to every

individual we work with and continue to

inspire meaningful change in their lives.
