Welcome
elcome to the first issue of 2025! We hope you all
enjoyed some time to rest and relax over the festive
break, and have returned energised and excited for
a good year ahead.
New years represent fresh starts and new beginnings for many of us
and for many of the people you work with. January can be considered
a difficult month by many, but it can be turned into a month of renewed
strength and rejuvenation to tackle recovery journeys and can be a
great time to discuss and set achievable goals.
This issue we hear from Dr Dee Burrows and Victoria Collins who run
Energise Health, an organisation that exists to empower participants
to take control of their recovery journey and live as well as possible
through self-management. You can find out more about Energise Health
on page 6.
We also introduce you to Ian Taverner, aka Mr Cookfulness, on page
14. Cookfulness is a movement that is encouraging people living
with chronic illness, chronic pain, and disability to find their love of
cooking. Ian’s encouraging approach and advice teaches people to take
everything at their own pace, to associate cooking with happy moments,
to feel a sense of achievement with everything they make, and to
ultimately find the joy in cooking.
You will also find product highlights, case studies and training courses
available. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to
highlight your work within the case management community by
emailing Ros@CaseManagementUK.co.uk.

Dr Dee Burrows and Victoria Collins
share more about the work they
do at Energise Health to empower
participants and transform lives
ARISH IS IN HIS LATE
20S. He had fallen at
work and was struggling
with back, leg and ankle
pain. He wanted to attend
our Energise Recovery
4Life Programme to learn strategies to better manage
his pain, low mood, poor sleep and mobility. He
wanted to help with his baby, laugh with his wife, visit
his parents and in-laws and work to support his family.
His pain was interfering with work as he was no longer
able to sit for the time required to see a client.
When he joined our facilitated online course, Marish
was using heat, cold and medication for pain, trying
to engage in activities with his family and to follow a
sleep routine despite his young baby! By the end of
the programme, he had incorporated 27 of the 30 self-
management strategies we introduce participants to,
into his daily life. He commented that he had “learnt a
lot” and felt he was “embarking on a new adventure”.
Energise Health is a partnership run by Dr Dee Burrows
and Victoria Collins. Dee is a nurse and pain specialist;
she also knows a lot about long COVID. Victoria is an
occupational therapist, rehabilitation case manager and
currently a senior manager in the case management
world. Together, our passion lies in enabling people to
take control of their recovery journey and live as well
as possible through self-management.
I was sceptical

programme has given
me tools that I can
use in the future”
HEALTH + WELLNESS
THE PROGRAMME AIMS ARE:
• Educate participants about how the body
and mind respond to injury and long-term
conditions.
• Introduce typical responses that can arise,
including pain, stress, anxiety, depression,
poor sleep, reduced activity and energy
levels.
• Support development of a personalised
toolkit of practical, evidence-based, self-
management strategies to draw on during
their recovery
• Teach practical approaches to integrating
their strategies into their daily lives.
ENERGISE RECOVERY PROGRAMMES
Energise Recovery Programmes are evidence-based,
drawing from recovery models and self-management
theory. They focus on personal strengths rather than
illness identity and on enabling hope, allowing the
individual to focus on what is possible and learn how
to thrive.
Each programme is six weeks long and is delivered via
Microsoft Teams to groups of up to eight participants.
Sessions are interactive and facilitated by two health
care professionals. Each course takes around 12 hours
to complete, including taught sessions and coursework,
and is charged at a fixed fee of £550.
At Energise Health, we offer two facilitated
online courses, which follow the same content
and format but cater for participants at different
stages in their recovery journey:
• Energise Recovery: 6 weeks to 6 months
post injury or diagnosis
• Energise Recovery 4Life: 6 months or
more post injury or diagnosis

THERE ARE SIX MODULES:
• Energy, Recovery and Bodily Sensations
• Thoughts and Emotions
• Sleep and Rest
• Movement and Activity
• My Energise Recovery Toolkit
• Energising Your Recovery in the Future
The taught sessions consist of an overview
of the topic followed by an introduction to
between five and six related strategies per
module. We practice many of the strategies
within the sessions. Participants also have
a comprehensive handbook and access to a
Participant Hub of resources, hints and tips
on our website to support their practice in the
weeks between the modules.

course most helpful

HEALTH + WELLNESS
Throughout the programme, we introduce participants to a total of 30 self-management strategies
(See Figure 1), each of which is underpinned by its own evidence base. Combined, these strategies
make up the Energise Recovery Toolkit.
Figure 1
Cognitive science teaches us that in order to change
our behaviour and establish positive habits, we need
to trial and practice the strategies we want to embed.
We have all been on great courses, left full of energy
but found several months later that we have made
minimal changes. A key concept running throughout
the Energise Recovery courses is therefore integration.
We consistently talk about ways for participants to
embed their chosen strategies into daily life, including
“hooking” new strategies onto established habits,
building them into their activity diary and implementing
cues, prompts and reminders.
Owing to the educational nature of the courses, we
do not tell participants to practice strategies from one
module to the next, rather we invite them to do so.
What helps for one person, may not help another - and
developing a personalised Energise Recovery Toolkit
is about each individual establishing new habits that
make sense to them, that work in their life, with their
family, friends and colleagues.
Part of the reason this invitational approach is important
is because of the tenants of recovery models and
self-management. A further reason relates to the
varied nature of our participant group – some having
sustained major trauma or musculoskeletal conditions.
Others having been diagnosed with long term health
conditions such as long COVID, MS, diabetes, vestibular
conditions, strokes etc. Our suitability criteria are wide:
18 years or over, access to an internet connected
device; motivated to engage in the programme and
able to focus for 75 minutes in small interactive group
sessions of a maximum eight participants.
Participant benefits are, on the whole, significant.
We measure engagement with the programme: typically,
attendance is high and if someone does miss a session
we provide a pre-recorded version. Over 90% actively
participate once they feel comfortable and a similar
number complete their course handbook.
sing a tool designed with our programme development
experts the Energise Recovery Scale (ERS) measures
understanding of and confidence in managing injury,
or long-term condition before and after the programme.
Improvements are consistent.
Finally, the individual’s Energise Recovery Toolkit
provides us with insight as to the number and type of
