Manosphere, you may be
able to guess where this
article is headed. Since
writing that article, two major
events occurred that I
absolutely have to talk about.
The first happened here on
campus. I’m sure that you’ve
either heard, seen, or
experienced what is going on
in this picture and in the
video that circulated on
various social media
platforms and even on news
outlets.
f you read my last
article about Andrew
Taint and the
For those of you who are
unfamiliar with this incident,
the UM SigEp chapter was
closed after members, at a
pool party they hosted called
“Adult Swim”, chanted an
extremely graphic and
misogynistic song about
sexual assault and
necrophilia. The university
then issued a disciplinary
order and after the national
headquarters received the
report about the chant they
effectively shut down the
chapter. However what
AN ADVERSE REACTION
TO FEMALE LIBERATION
happened at this particular event is
not an isolated event. Female
students in Spain faced a very
similar situation: An all-male
college in Spain was put under
investigation after they banded
together to yell a shocking
misogynistic chant at an all-female
college. This effort was extremely
coordinated. In the video, you can
see all the men opening their
dormitory windows at the same
time and screaming in unison.
Although it is a disturbing sight, it is
not a surprising one.
Over the course of a year, we
have seen a rise in incidents
like this. Women are not
protected, we are not
respected, and we are not
valued by men who take part
in this kind of hate. I believe
this to be an adverse reaction
to female liberation.

with a sexist shout, ends with rape” (left)

for equal rights. You call us sluts and
nymphomaniacs.” (Right)
The female liberation movement
was a feminist movement that
took root in the 1960s. This is
known as the “second wave” of
feminism and is notable because
it included the topic of sexuality.
This is incredibly important to
note because the increase of
violence against women can be
linked to our increased openness
about our sexuality.
Notice that the majority of men
who claim to be incels or
subscribe to similar ideologies
always mention at some point that
women nowadays are “easy” or
sometimes they will just straight
up call all women prostitutes. The
attention to women’s sex lives is
interesting because one major
complaint of these men is that
while women are, as they would
have you believe, sleeping their
way through life, they are not the
ones benefiting from women’s
supposed promiscuity. In this day
and age where social media has
brought women and their
sexuality to the forefront, they are
angered that they still are unable
to attract these “easy” women.
Now, most of us know that these
men and their ideologies are
absolutely ridiculous, but that
does not mean that it does not
have repercussions.
Keep in mind that part of change
is starting the conversation. Don’t
be afraid to have discussions with
men who you know, who may
follow other men who perpetrate
harmful ideologies and don’t
understand the effects those
words can have on women.
Change is slow, but it is possible.
Until next time, take care of
yourself.

The continued increase in
violence against women is
alarming because, despite our
steps to move past misogyny
and gender inequality, it seems
like we are constantly being
pushed backward. The
American Journal of
Emergency Medicine reported
earlier this year that the number
of domestic violence cases has
increased by 25 to 33 percent
globally. This should be
especially concerning to women
as domestic abuse is a
gendered crime. More than
85% of domestic violence
victims are women, with men
being the primary suspect in
these cases 96% of the time.
Now, while this article should
serve as a warning, I do not
want it to just be that. So, I
have added a few resources for
those of you that may be
interested in learning ways to
protect yourself.

Body positivity is a huge topic in the music
industry and here are some encouraging and
confident singers embracing their bodies. As
women, we should never feel ashamed, scared or
discouraged for the way we look. We often feel
compelled by the media and society to look a
certain way. We may think that we need to get
surgeries, lose weight and fit a certain “look.” But
we should embrace who we are and the way we
look. Here are a few examples of powerful
women in the music industry speaking out on
body positivity.
Anitta is a Brazilian icon and known for
speaking out on body positivity and not being
ashamed of showing every inch of her body to the
world. One of the aspects of her body that Anitta
embraces is her cellulite. She refuses to hide this
and proudly embraces her cellulite in many of her
music videos, especially “Vai Malandra” as she
twerks in a black bathing suit to Brazilian funk.
Anitta stated
“I’m not going to take this problem to me. I
don’t hide it. I don’t feel like, “Oh my God, let
me hide my cellulite”. I just put it in the music
video, if people like, fine. If they don’t, fine
too” (Williams, 2021).
Lizzo is no stranger to being an ambassador of
self-love. From showing women they are
beautiful no matter what size, how many rolls
they have, and to having backup dancers of all
sizes dance alongside her, she has become a role
model by raising awareness on normalizing all
body types.
Lizzo stated in an article by Billboard,
“I think it’s lazy for me to just say I’m body
positive at this point. It’s easy. I would like to be
body-normative...I want to normalize my body.
And not just be like, ‘Ooh, look at this cool
movement. Being fat is body positive.’ No, being
fat is normal. I think now, I owe it to the people
who started this to not just stop here. We have
to make people uncomfortable again, so that we
can continue to change. Change is always
uncomfortable, right?” (Mamo, 2020)
Lady Gaga has been very vocal on body positivity
as well. In her 2017 Super Bowl performance she
faced criticism about her “flabby stomach” by
internet trolls and celebrities chiming in. Gaga’s
response to the criticism was
“I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I
wanted to say, I'm proud of my body and you
should be proud of yours too. No matter who
you are or what you do. I could give you a
million reasons why you don't need to cater to
anyone or anything to succeed. Be you and be
relentlessly you. That's the stuff of
champions...”
from an Instagram post. This response shows fans
that Gaga is confident in how she looks and does
not let trolls bully her. This is a lesson for women
of all shapes and sizes to ignore what people say
and to embrace who you truly are.
All three of these amazing women in the music
industry have experienced negative comments and
opinions of others about their bodies. However,
they have gone against what the haters say and
proudly embraced what they look like. A message
to women all over the world, we should learn to
love ourselves, ignore the haters and be happy with
the way our bodies look. We only have one body,
and it is ours to love.
